The “I’s” Have It

M. E. Boyd

2/16/2024

Miss Constitution has noticed that confusing words, sentences, paragraphs, and columns seem to be multiplying, leaving the average American anxious about what to believe and who to trust.  She is sympathetic.  Many go to sources for short snippets thinking they are getting accurate information when they are getting just enough information for the conclusion to be misleading.

An example – the word “bipartisan” has been used lately regarding legislation devised in the Senate regarding border security and foreign aid.  It was “sold” as bipartisan because a Republican and a Democrat sponsored the Bill.  The word “bipartisan” is commonly thought to mean compromise between political parties. 100% of all Democrats voting the same way with a few Republicans thrown in is not bipartisanship.  Bipartisanship is sufficient members of one Party supporting the legislative position of the other Party.  So, to be considered bipartisan, some Democrats would have voted against the so-called Border Security Bill and some Republicans would have voted for it.

An ancillary to confusion regarding the definition of important words is the misleading labeling of legislation. The proposed Border Security Bill would not have secured the border.  Anti-inflation legislation has caused, not stopped, inflation.  The American Rescue Plan has rescued nothing.  Miss Constitution would suggest the voting public disregard titles attached to legislation and know the contents instead. To know the contents of legislation, Bills must be understandable and the public must be fully informed partly through hearings and debate, allowing them to discover hidden provisions and possible unintended negative consequences. This would be true for both Democrat and Republican legislation.

Confusion is lessened if we remember our 7th grade civics class regarding how a Bill becomes a federal Law:

A Bill is written by Congressional staff and lobbyists (salespeople), sponsored by either a Senator or Congressman or more than one, approved by House or Senate leadership, and proposed in either the House or the Senate, unless it is a Bill to raise revenue that must originate in the House.

The Bill is then assigned to an appropriate subject-matter Committee for further examination and public hearings.  After the public has had a chance to review the legislation and hear debate on the Bill, amendments might be introduced.  The Committee then votes the Bill out of committee, with or without amendments, for a full vote, scheduled by leadership.

The Bill, passed by a majority or super-majority (if required), is then sent to the opposite chamber (House or Senate) for the same process.

Why this elaborate process?  The Founders created this complex and transparent process to reflect the fact that we are a Constitutional Republic, not a Democracy.  The public elects representatives to stand in for them. To avoid inevitable corruption where taxpayer money is spent, the public must be allowed to hear debate on federal legislation, to be informed of every aspect of the proposed legislation, to know who would profit by the passage of the legislation, to know what “poison pills” are embedded in the legislation, and to be clear what the provisions of the legislation really mean to taxpayers.

After additional hearings in Committee in the opposite chamber and any amendments, if the Bill is changed but passes that chamber, a reconciliation between the House and Senate produces the final Bill for a final vote. The legislation then goes to the President for signature or veto.  If vetoed, 2/3 of both the House and Senate can override the veto and the Bill becomes law.

For this process to work as the Founders intended, Bills must be short in length, involve one primary subject, and be available to study without hurry.  Live public hearings must be available and any conflicts of interest exposed.  In other words, ‘regular order”must be followed.  Regular order does not prevent all corruption, but lack of regular order guarantees it.  Regular order includes a free and fair press, with all points of view available to the public.  The 1st Amendment’s Free Speech Clause to the United States Constitution precludes a government actor from calling any point of view on public policy “misinformation” or “disinformation.”  We learned this the hard way with the COVID pandemic and the resultant unnecessary deaths of many Americans.

The Founders had it right.  However, with many American political leaders unknowing or unwilling to follow the US Constitution and regular order, three I-words – Invasion, Insurrection, and Impeachment need to be explained.

“Invasion” has traditionally been thought to be a hostile entrance by force and implies military action.  Many have argued that mass migration is not an “invasion.”  Miss Constitution, however, would define it as the illegal encroachment of a sovereign border.  Using this definition, the United States government must prevent this encroachment – Article IV, section 4 – or let each state prevent it – Article I, section 10.  It is not the alien who is illegal, it is the act of crossing a sovereign border without permission or vetting that is illegal.  International interests in eliminating nation-states does not take precedence over the United States Constitution unless by vote of the whole American people to dissolve their nation.

“Insurrection” is a revolt against political authority.  Amendment XIV, section 3 defines it also as a rebellion against one’s oath to support the United States Constitution and referred to persons who supported the armed revolt against the United States during the Civil War.  An insurrection is not a riot or a violent protest against perceived political injustice.  The riot of January 6 was completely preventable and occurred through the negligence of those who had a duty to protect both the Capitol and elected representatives within the Capitol.

“Impeachment” is a Constitutionally mandated political process to hold those who serve the nation accountable for high crimes and misdemeanors while in office.  The House of Representatives impeaches (accuses) and the Senate tries the case.  What constitutes a high crime or misdemeanor is up to the House.  Removal from office and public shame are the punishments.  Impeachment is not a legal process.

Miss Constitution understands that few adult Americans have the time or inclination to sift through the myriad of ways those in power attempt to mislead, misdirect, or misinform We the People.  She would say that the “I” qualities most helpful to the average citizen in protecting our Constitutional Republic are Inquisitiveness and Integrity.  The basically good American, wanting to know why certain things are happening, who is responsible for those things, and what can be done about them is the measure of being inquisitive. Making sure those responsible are held accountable is the measure of having integrity.

In all aspects of life, the “I’s” have it!

The vacant farmland on 159th Street within Homer Glen’s planning boundaries that the village would like to see used for a mixed-use development.

PUBLISHED: July 20, 2022 at 4:42 p.m. | UPDATED: July 20, 2022 at 8:42 p.m.

A Will County committee will reexamine a proposal for a self-service storage facility to be built on just over 32 acres of vacant farmland after the village of Homer Glen and Homer Township objected to the plan.

Peter and Amy Katowicz, who own an outdoor, self-service storage facility in Volo, want to open a second Illinois location in the 15300 block of 159th Street, between Gougar and Cedar roads in Homer Township. The business would provide traditional drive-up and temperature controlled self storage and also areas to store boats and recreational vehicles.

The land is located in Homer Township, but it is on the border of Homer Glen and is in the village’s long-term plans. The Will County Board would have to change its zoning from agricultural to industrial for the storage facility to be built.

Melissa King, Homer Glen’s director of planning and zoning, said the village objects both to the industrial zoning and storage facility, which do not fit with the village’s vision for 159th Street. Village officials want the 159th Street corridor to host high quality commercial and residential properties that provide jobs and revenue for the town. The Homer Glen Village Board voted to file an objection to the plan last month.

Peter Katowicz said he is building a high quality, state-of-the-art facility that would complement the nearby area, and he plans to donate 10 acres of land in the back of his property to the Forest Preserve District of Will County, which abuts the proposed storage facility.

Homer Glen officials objected to the plan this summer because they would like input on developing the 159th Street corridor.

Melissa King, Homer Glen’s director of planning and zoning, said the industrial zoning and proposed use is not compatible with the area. She said the village’s vision is to have a mixed development with retailers, restaurants and other sales tax producers as well as offices and housing. She said village officials are concerned once the land is rezoned, other properties could be rezoned as well.

Homer Glen village manager Carmen Maurella said prime, developable land has sat vacant on 159th Street while the Illinois Department of Transportation completed its multiyear widening project and the village extended utilities.

“Let the village control the development is what we are asking,” Maurella said.

Will County Board member Steve Balich, who is also Homer Township supervisor, said Homer Township officials also object to the plan.

“The project itself looks nice,” Balich said. “It’s just in the wrong area.”

Bonnie Willis, a real estate agent representing the property and a Homer Township resident, said the storage facility fits well along the corridor, which also includes a gas station, furniture store, landscaping businesses, a picnic grove, vacant land and houses. Areas throughout the corridor have different zoning classifications.

She said if nearby residents objected, they would have protested to the county, but they did not voice any concerns. Rather, she said, she collected signatures from neighbors who supported the development.

The project would bring in sales tax and property tax without affecting schools or generating high volumes of traffic, Willis said. It would also give residents a place to store motor homes and boats, which is needed since many homeowners associations do not allow these recreational vehicles at a resident’s home.

Board member Jim Moustis, a Republican from Frankfort, said even though Homer Glen is located within 1 1/2 miles of the development, it didn’t appear any of the nearby properties were actively planning to be annexed into the village.

He said he doesn’t want to deny property owners the right to develop in unincorporated territory.

“What is your path to ever annexing this property in, because I don’t think it’s fair for unincorporated property owners to be in some kind of limbo or held hostage because municipalities have a 1 1/2 mile oversight,” Moustis said.

Several other board members expressed satisfaction with storage facilities within their districts and said they were an asset.

“A boat rusting in a neighbor’s front yard is unsightly,” said board member Rachel Ventura, a Democrat from Joliet. “A boat sitting in a storage facility where no one can see it regardless if it’s rusty or sparkling clean is not an eyesore. I would prefer people put their RVs and boats somewhere out of our neighborhoods.”

The Will County Italian American Association Stands With The JCCIA OPPOSING Renaming Columbus Drive

The Executive Board of the Will County Italian American Association: Steve Balich, Jay Roti, Mike Bonomo, Brent Porfilio, Carmen Consolino, Carmen Maurella, and Dan Fialko are appalled at the continued slaps against any ethnic group. Italians have contributed so much to the world yet are continually having to deal with mistreatment of our Heritage, Culture, and Contributions. This must stop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chicago’s Italian American Community Strongly Opposes

4th Ward Alderman Lamont Robinson’s

Renaming of Columbus Drive Proposal

CHICAGO: “Insensitive and unvetted,” said Ron Onesti, President of The Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans, about 4th Ward Alderman Lamont Robinson’s proposal to rename Columbus Drive after the 44th President, Barack Obama.

The organization that represents over fifty Italian American organizations in the Chicago area is furious at the suggestion, citing it as another flippant act against an ethnic group that has contributed much to this great city.

“As we commend Alderman Robinson’s intent of honoring a most worthy historic, home-town figure, why must it be at the expense of one ethnic group, and why take such a noble effort and attach it to an action offensive to the over 500,000 Americans of Italian descent in and around Chicago,” Onesti asked. “It would be more relevant to rename a portion of South Greenwood Avenue where the Obama residence is, or Stony Island Avenue where the Barack Obama Presidential Library sits.”

Columbus Drive was named for the explorer as part of the Century of Progress World’s Fair in 1933 on “Italian Day”, celebrating contributions made by Italians to the development of the city.

The JCCIA implores Alderman Robinson to retract his proposal and invite Chicago’s Italian American community to join the effort to find a relevant, all-inclusive, and positive way to honor a leader who is a symbol of pride for all Chicagoans, and a role model for its youth.

The JCCIA has attempted to reach Alderman Robinson to inform him of the insensitivity of his proposal.

Dry Bones

“Ezekiel cried, “Dem dry bones!”
Ezekiel cried, “Dem dry bones!”
Ezekiel cried, “Dem dry bones!”
“Oh, hear the word of the Lord.”

The foot bone connected to the leg bone,
The leg bone connected to the knee bone,
The knee bone connected to the thigh bone,
The thigh bone connected to the back bone,
The back bone connected to the neck bone,
The neck bone connected to the head bone,
Oh, hear the word of the Lord!

American Spiritual – Ezekiel 37 “The hand of the Lord came upon me and brought me out in the Spirit of the Lord, and set me down in the midst of the valley; and it was full of bones.” New King James

Miss Constitution has been conducting her own small survey at appropriate times and places to see just what average Americans know about their political history.  She has asked the same question over and over again, “who was the third President of the United States?”  Not wanting to embarrass if no immediate response, she switched immediately to “who was the first President of the United States?”

Not one person has answered the first question but several have answered the second correctly. What are we to make of this result?  Miss Constitution thinks we should interpret the informal result as an indication that most people think our whole system is on auto-pilot.  Most people are not interested in who the third President was and find no relevance in understanding the past.  That we seem to have stable political and social institutions is simply taken for granted.

Most Americans and others, in what has been since 1783 a separate nation-state, wake up in the morning, turn on the lights, brush their teeth, put on the coffee or squeeze the juice, check their phone or computer, take a hot shower, get dressed in clean clothes, feed the pets, and are then are off to school or work.  None think about the fact that the street is paved, that the traffic lights work, that there is a drugstore that is open, that there is a station to gas-up the car, that there is a bakery to get pastries for the office, or that there is a policeman sitting in his car making sure all is well.

Dem bones, dem bones, dem dry bones

Dem bones, dem bones, dem dry bones,

Dem bones, dem bones, dem dry bones,

Oh, hear the word of the Lord.

It is all connected:  the philosophies that undergird our system, the development of the person not the group, individual liberties against government power, private enterprise and property, economic initiative, checks and balances, the Rule of Law, and the consent of the governed among other critical concepts.  The American system is unique in the world and constantly under attack from its adversaries.

The foot bone connected to the leg bone. . .

The philosophy of virtue, from Aristotle to Frances Hutcheson to Adam Smith and others.  This is not the philosophy of the negative about human nature, but the positive.  Our political and social system is based on the potential of human beings on their life’s journey to make mistakes of choice but then to improve – to fail but then succeed – to have wronged but then repent –  to start slow but then recover.  Deeply rooted faith helps in this journey – religion has essential tools for repair and progress.  Studying the Scottish Enlightenment and Judeo-Christian doctrine helps one understand this aspect of our system.

The leg bone connected to the knee bone. . . .

Each person in each group must be vetted for virtue and helped, if help is needed, individually.  American blacks have had a special status as a group because of their unique place in our history.  Each American black must nevertheless be judged individually relative to the law.  Studying authentic American history helps one understand this aspect of our system.

The knee bone connected to the thigh bone. . .

Our Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments to the United States Constitution, lists personal rights against government power.  In addition, power not granted the federal government is reserved to the states or to the people.  Recognized rights not listed in the Bill of Rights still belong to the individual.  Studying American governance (Civics) helps one understand this aspect of our system.

The thigh bone connected to the back bone. . .

America’s economic prosperity is based on private business and the sanctity of private ownership of property.  Government funds its functions through taxation of profits created by private individuals and businesses.  Government policy can help or hinder business but cannot substitute for it.  Adam Smith connected raising capital and the requirement of all who make a profit to give back to the society as a whole. Greed is to be overcome. Studying the basis of American economics, especially relative to other economic models, helps one understand this aspect of our system.

The back bone connected to the neck bone. . .

Unchecked power corrupts. It runs through all levels of our governments, business, and politics without enough unbiased press to expose it. The Founder’s partial answer to corruption is balance – checks on misuse of power and balance between competing power centers. Studying what Journalism is supposed to be in the American experience helps one understand this aspect of our system.

The neck bone connected to the head bone. . .

America’s Rule of Law – four large bundles of it – adopted with the consent of the governed must all be acknowledged and obeyed for a stable society to exist.  In our unique system we have a duty to obey Moral Law (right versus wrong); Natural Law (unalienable rights from God); Positive Law (our Constitutions, statutes, and common law); and Unwritten Law (courtesy and comity between all.)  Without this obedience, America’s stability might simply dissolve away and investment in us with it.

Miss Constitution understands most Americans have taken all this for granted.  Our system now, however, needs your study and your care.  And the third President was?

Why Shoot the Bridegroom?

M. E. Boyd

3/12/2024

“Why shoot the bridegroom after a shotgun wedding?” – unknown, but a comment made when the Supreme Court changed positions on New Deal legislation when Franklin Roosevelt threatened to pack the Supreme Court in the 1930s.

Last week in Miss Constitution’s column, The Heart and The Hammer, she advised that you forget listening to pundits (even your favorites) and for now discern what is true from your empirical senses (seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling).  This is because there are so many artificially created “facts” and distorted images or omissions of images that one cannot tell political truth from fiction at this time.

Miss Constitution stands by her statement that our Constitutional Republic has been suspended. To get it back, if that is what a majority of citizens want, will take hard individual, daily effort by every American and every resident who wants to be a part of our grand experiment in the development of the individual person.  Both political parties have significant corruption (though not all in positions of trust are corrupt); Congress refuses to proceed in regular order so that We the People can get a real idea of what is being proposed and its cost; and some persons currently serving and retired from the Executive Branch, involving critical intelligence and defense policy, border on betrayal.

Miss Constitution feels it is unnecessary to name names.  If citizens are watching, listening, tasting, and smelling they know exactly who has, is, and wants to betray them. In her view, our laser focus needs to be on the Republican Party.

The Republican Party is the bridegroom in a shotgun wedding.  They have been co-opted to appear as an opposition to the Democrat Party that is now openly Marxist, without apology, intending to make good on transforming America as part of the global hegemony run by an oligarchy of international bankers, media magnets, and corporate political sycophants. None of these players has any interest in “brown people” as one commentator mentioned on CNN, and will themselves be subject to the same tyranny they wish upon other Americans. China, North Korea, and Iran will see to that.

The Democrat Party is not the problem. They are very clear about what they want (and have wanted since at least 1912) and how they intend to get it. Their political strategies over time have finally overwhelmed the system. Your senses surely have noticed:

Democrat Party funded efforts to destroy public safety by defunding the police, placing non-functioning District Attorneys in key states and cities, providing sanctuaries for known violent terrorists and criminals so that they can be released into communities to physically injure, maim, or kill innocent human beings.  In unison, Democrats vote into office persons responsible for the death of their own children and others.  Such is the power of branding – one can see it, hear it, smell it and taste it.

Democrat Party funded efforts to eviscerate America’s entire system of public education, its once-respected institutions of higher learning, and even what is left of its top-of-the-line innovation in complex defense systems for the armed forces, including the Space Force. No amount of available wealth will save American families from the results of a lack of an effective national defense.  Our military and intelligence operations must be second-to-none. In unison, Democrats vote into office persons responsible for the miseducation of our children and the diminution of our military.  Such is the power of branding – one can see it, hear it, smell it and taste it.

Democrat Party funded efforts to crush the pride most Americans feel in their communities, in their families, in their faith, and in their own skin and background.  The entire industry of race-based hate education against white Americans, Jewish Americans, Asian Americans and others as an attempt to inspire “social justice” is, of course, its opposite.  These efforts have been highly successful in some main-line Christian Churches, stewing in a kind of white self-loathing. In unison, Democrats vote into office persons responsible for racial division, racial chaos, and racial violence. Such is the power of branding – one can see it, hear it, smell it and taste it.

Why would the Democrat Party support these things when all Democrats will eventually be injured, also?

Miss Constitution has no explanation for the inexplicable. She also does not know why the Republican Party would go along with it except that the corruption has gone deep and they have enjoyed the cover of a faux bipartisanship under the direction of Democrat and Republican leadership – the bridegroom with a gun to his head. When in power they seem unable to lead. Citizens must HEAR and SEE the following to have any confidence that the Republican Party can help restore the sanity now required to bring back our Constitutional system and Rule of Law:

The public must hear and see new Republican Party leadership. Proteges of current bridegrooms are unacceptable. There can be no more “projects” created whose purpose is to persuade Republicans to destroy other Republicans. The Party must state a mission in concert with the Constitution, govern by its word, and admit any error when error is made. The Party must encourage honest political journalism as the critical eyes and ears for We the People.

The public must hear and see a commitment by Republican Party leadership to end earmarks and other self-serving practices. Deep-seated Republican corruption must come to an end.

The public must hear and see an intention by Republican Party leadership to restore regular order in Congress.  This means that Bills have one subject, not three or more, be readable and understandable, go through extensive public hearings in specialized Committees so that intended and unintended consequences can be fleshed out, amendments proposed, and, if the Bill is passed, sent to the other House for the same long process.

What if the Republican Party continues to go to the altar under duress?  What if the Republican Party cannot bring itself to be worthy intellectual opposition to the suspension and dismantling of our Constitutional Republic?

The Party must be disbanded and a new opposition Party formed.

Miss Constitution would remind readers that our federal government is composed of three CO-EQUAL branches – Congress (the legislative branch), the President and executive officials (the executive branch), and the Supreme Court and lesser federal courts (the judicial branch).  Each is supposed to display utmost courtesy and comity to the other.  When Franklin Roosevelt was stymied by the Supreme Court he gave a friendly fireside chat on the radio and offered to “help” the Justices.  The Court caved under the immense pressure of his popularity.  In today’s world, we simply entrap our opposition in its own corruption and drag them to the altar.  Why shoot the bridegroom after a shotgun wedding?  He’s already agreed to the arranged marriage

Bud Light and the American Brand By M.E. Boyd Miss Constitution

Miss Constitution, along with perhaps a majority of American citizens, are now fully weary of the endless evaluations of American culture and the inane questioning of institute scholars who detail their opinions of the nation’s demise without any tangible answers. “Wake up” is the equivalent of their standard advice. Miss Constitution cuts to the chase:

The United States does not now exist as a sovereign nation-state. We have no enforced borders.

She would also say that the longer We the People keep discussing what has already taken place the harder it will be to recover, if that is even possible. No amount of wishing and hoping can change anything. Are there not persons to be blamed? Well, yes, there are individual betrayers from our history – some of whom would surprise the public – but it is more about how human beings can be moved by “branding”, are loyal to “branding”, and thus can lose their ability to process empirical information.

Human beings absorb, sort, and make judgments based on both their ability to reason (inductively and deductively) and by what their senses tell them (the empirical). “Branding” is one powerful way to eliminate the senses and convince the public that what they are seeing, hearing, smelling, or tasting is not reality. In America’s Constitutional Republic, judgment by the People is critical to its functioning, so that which distorts or impairs public judgment can destroy the whole system. This political malware is now embedded in the system.

Has this been deliberately done and for how long has this been going on?

Yes, this has been deliberately done and has been going on seriously since research and experiments in mind control in the 1930’s. It is represented today by much of the public media, much of social media, and public education (not necessarily public charter education). Here are a few examples of how easy it is to be steered away from our senses:

A huge Chinese balloon with spy equipment seen by the naked eye flies across the sovereign territory of the United States and its sensitive military installations. Civilians first brought the event to the nation’s attention. The balloon was allowed to collect and transmit to our primary international enemy national security information without impediment. What did we just see? The answer given was nothing to see.

A young child screaming in pain, part of the lucrative open border drug-cartel sex trafficking operations in the United States, finally loses her voice – death her only wish. What did we just hear? The answer given was the border is closed – nothing to hear.

A visit to San Francisco streets teeming with human refuse and desperate people. What did we just smell? The answer given was that this is an alternative to required treatment – nothing to smell.

Is it possible for human beings to “wake up” to the psychological power of branding?

Actually, no. Very few human beings are able to do it although there are always the one or two who do. We know of one or two Americans and one or two Russians who realized they had been brainwashed and warned America about buying into branding Joseph Stalin “Uncle Joe” – some kindly ruler rather than a killer of millions of people. Miss Constitution would suggest our society move on from trying to “wake up” and accept that we have lost our nation.

For those who think this would be a loss, what can be done?

First, take the whole issue out of politics. This is neither a Democrat nor a Republican problem. Both major political parties have been deceived as have members and adherents. Resist laying blame. The human body can not stand up against being hit full force by a heavy truck. Nor can the human mind, however intelligent and perceptive, resist modern brainwashing techniques. Children are completely helpless which is why all efforts are being made through “tic toc” (an arm of the Communist Party) and other social media to destroy America’s children.

Second, ask yourself the simple question of whether or not you think America as a nation-state should exist. If you say, “no”, it should not exist you have already achieved your goal. If you say, “yes”, then you must do three things quickly:

recognize that you cannot fight head on against the forces of destruction in front of you

step to the side and let the weight of this evil force fall as it attempts to overpower you

unite with others who share your desire to see America live regardless of their political past – E Pluribus Unum – from many, one America

Third, instead if trying to learn the complexities of our Rule of Law and Constitutional system at this late date, just understand the following:

our unique system is about the development of each individual person – never the collective

our unique system encourages the building of a personal moral core that defends against evil

our unique system requires adherence to the entire American Rule of Law

The American Brand, one of the most respected and revered for its resilience and strength, for its general ability to provide the most opportunity for the most people, for its requirement of service to others, for its call to honor a higher power, for its devotion to family and community, has given way to another brand whose confidence in victory over these qualities is displayed every day in arrogance, impudence, and deceit. In corporate America, Bud Light made the same mistake We the People have now made. Bud Light’s brand ended overnight.

Miss Constitution understands that most Americans have no idea what has happened to their country. She simply calls for each citizen to entertain the possibility that an evil force of whatever name has proven to be stronger than thought possible and that uniting together, however politically strange for many, is the only way to return the nation to a sovereign state.

What brand has captured you? Faux social justice? A political Party? A secret society? A false religious sect? Have we thrown away the American Brand carelessly? Are we Bud Light?

IL Freedom Caucus Statement on Governor’s State of the State Address

February 21, 2024

IL Freedom Caucus Statement on Governor’s State of the State Address

IL Freedom Caucus Statement on Governor’s State of the State Address (Springfield, IL) — The Illinois Freedom Caucus says the Governor’s sixth budget State of the State is another fairytale that rivals even the Brothers Grimm.

“The Governor wants to call his critics Doom Grifters, or as normal people would say ‘realists.’ The rosy picture JB Pritzker is trying to paint is simply not based in reality. Not once did the Governor address the state’s continued population loss. If current trends continue, Illinois will lose not one but two Congressional seats in the next Census.

Nor did the Governor mention the state’s massive pension debt. He also failed to mention Illinois’s massive budget hole and what his plan is to address it. Massive fee increases have been mentioned in media reports as a means of plugging the budget hole, but he did not address the state’s fiscal problems nor a solution to fix them.

Instead, we focused, as he always does, on highlighting spending increases. We believe the addition of new spending at a time when there is a massive budget hole is ill advised. We are in this financial mess because we have had a long line of weak leaders who prefer to pander than they do to lead. It is easier to throw money around than it is to make tough choices.

No one is against spending money on education, but we need results, not more spending. When in one in 10 Black students in the City of Chicago can only read at grade level – something is clearly wrong. The solution is accountability, competition, and better allocation of resources. Spending money for the sake of spending money has been an unmitigated disaster. We need leadership, not additional unchecked spending.

The Governor also wants to spend another $182 million on people who are not supposed to be here legally. There is an easy way to solve this problem and it is to end the Sanctuary State status. This problem cannot be solved at the state level and we should stop trying to do something we simply can’t do. This spending on illegal immigrants is just not sustainable.

Finally, we can support the end of the sales tax on groceries. When the Governor called for the temporary elimination of this tax, we said then that eliminating the sales tax on groceries should be permanent. We believe in keeping our word and will support the Governor’s efforts to end this tax.”

Homer Glen residents are opposing a Will County plan to widen 143rd Street between Lemont Road and Bell Road from 2 lanes to 5 lanes with federal aid.

HOMER GLEN, Ill. — As Will County considers a $60 million plan to widen 143rd from Lemont Road to Bell Road, Homer Glen residents are voicing their opposition.

Christy Nahser keeps horses on a 31-acre farm in Homer Glen. Like many of her neighborhoods, she moved to this quiet area for its rural atmosphere and to get away from the congestion of the city and closer suburbs.

She’s got signs in her yard opposing the proposal to widen the two-lane road that runs by the farm the five lanes.

“It’s just gonna increase the traffic and the speed. People go down this road now at 60 miles an hour even though the speed limit is 45,” Nahser said.

The road widening proposal applies to a three mile stretch that goes mostly through Homer Glen and Homer Township. A couple hundred residents shows up at a public hearing on the issue last week, most opposed to widening the road.

Some are concerned about the increased traffic in front of several schools along that stretch of 143rd. Many are worried about preserving the rural lifestyle that brought them there in the first place.

“We moved here to get away from the city. And now they’re trying to shove the city down our throat,” said Homer Township Supervisor Steve Balich.

Much of the funding for the project would come from federal grants.

“We could be throwing away tens of millions of federal aid dollars,” said Will County Board Member Joe VanDuyne, who supports the expansion project.

Nahser said if the road expands, she may have to leave.

“I don’t know if I can stay. I really don’t. Five lanes and a horse barn?” she said.

The Will County Board is scheduled to vote on the proposal at their meeting Thursday morning. If it is approved, construction would begin in 2026 and could be completed by 2028.
