STEAM labs generating interest from area districts
Homer School District 33C’s STEAM labs are gaining momentum — and the attention of surrounding school districts.
Since opening the Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math labs this fall, Homer 33C has received several phone calls from educators wanting to learn more about the labs and how the district is Preparing Future Ready Students.
Last month, the district offered its first tour.
Homewood School District 153 Superintendent Dale Mitchell, Principal Scott McAlister and School Board President Michelle Marks visited the STEAM labs at Hadley Middle School and Homer Junior High.
“They wanted to see our STEAM labs in action,” said Hadley Middle School Principal Kristen Schroeder, who accompanied the group on their visit. “Our districts are very similar.”
The group got to see students and teachers in action as they planned, designed, built and implemented projects using various types of technologies.
They saw students use a 3D printer to plan, design, calculate and print 3D objects. They saw students use a Lego robot to upload coded instructions. Most of all, they saw excitement as students created, collaborated and problem solved.
“When you visit a STEAM lab, you can’t help but be excited,” said Schroeder.
