Comer Children’s Hospital benefits from generosity of Homer Junior High students
Homer Junior High School students are spreading a little holiday cheer, gathering toys for children who are too ill to celebrate in their homes this holiday season.
 
Members of the school’s Honor Club led a toy drive Nov. 30 through Dec. 4, gathering toys for children hospitalized at Comer Children’s Hospital at the University of Chicago.
 
“They’re going to brighten someone’s holiday,” said Homer Junior High teacher and Honor Club sponsor Karen DeFilippis who co-sponsors the school’s service club with teacher Eileen Garrison.
 
Students created posters and hung them throughout the school soliciting donations. They also made daily announcements on the school’s PA system.
 
Classmates responded, bringing in an assortment of new toys, including Nerf footballs, board games, stuffed animals, dolls and even a Mr. Potato Head.
 
The toys will be delivered to Comer Children’s Hospital in time for the holidays.
 
This is the second year Homer’s Honor Club has donated toys to the hospital. The service club, which numbers about 80 students, strives to help others throughout the school year.
 
Earlier this year, they wrote letters to servicemen and women and created posters for Red Ribbon Week. They also visit Victorian Village, a retirement and assisted living facility in Homer Glen, on a regular basis and sometimes make dog biscuits for the local animal shelter.
 
Cheering up children at Comer Children’s Hospital is a project that students can relate to easily.
 
“Not everyone can be home for the holidays,” said DeFilippis. “This is going to brighten that day for them.”
