Homer Junior High student advances to national spelling bee

A Homer Junior High School student is headed to Washington, D.C. to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The student, an eighth-grader who won the school’s spelling bee in January, advanced to the national stage after winning the Will County Spelling Bee on March 3.

“We are so proud to see one of our students advance to the National Spelling Bee,” said Principal Troy Mitchell. “This is no small achievement, since she is only the third student in school history to qualify for such an honor.”

More than 40 students participated in the Will County Spelling Bee on March 3 at Lockport East High School.

It took just over two hours to determine the winner in the 12th round. The winning word was “battalion.”

“I just knew I had to focus on the moment, not my emotions going into it,” the eighth-grader told The Herald News immediately after winning the county bee. “I just had to focus on the spelling.”

The student will compete next at the Scripps National Spelling Bee on May 22.
