A “toast” to our volunteers
Homer 33C says “thank you” to parent volunteers who assist in the school libraries, tech labs, lunchrooms, playgrounds and classrooms
Homer School District 33C would be a far different place if it weren’t for the generous, supportive spirit of parents.
Each day, parent volunteers assist our students and staff by shelving books in the school libraries, opening difficult food containers and juice boxes in the school lunchrooms, and assisting students in the tech labs or classrooms.
On Thursday (April 14), the district honored its parent volunteers with a special Appreciation Brunch. The event was held in conjunction with National Volunteer Week.
“Thank you for extending your hands to volunteer,” Dolores Horazy-Gawel, the district’s volunteer coordinator, told parents as they gathered at Schilling School for the Appreciation Brunch.
“There are only 24 hours in a day, and you give so much of that day to us,” she added. “That gesture sends a message to children that school is important. Thank you for your support; we hope you enjoyed the experience.”
At the beginning of the school year, Homer 33C invited parents to consider helping out in the schools by completing an online application. Nearly 70 parents responded, volunteering their time and talents.
They joined a large pool of parents who were already assisting the schools through the Parent Teacher Organizations (PTOs) and Art Appreciation Program.
“We are fortunate to have so many parents who are willing and able to assist our students and staff,” said Kathleen Robinson, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction. “Because of their efforts, Homer 33C teachers and staff are able to offer more individualized attention and instruction to students.”
Students expressed their appreciation of parent volunteers by having the first-grade classes sing a special song for parents during the Appreciation Brunch. The song, which included such words as “thank you” and “we appreciate you,” was led by music teacher Rebecca Worley.
Because the volunteer program worked so well this year, administrators plan to bring it back next school year. An online application form will be posted on the district’s website at the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year.
