ISBE “listening tour” coming to Lockport
Parents, educators invited to share thoughts on Every Student Succeeds Act
Changes are on the horizon regarding student achievement standards and how we assess performance.
In December, President Obama signed into law the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), giving states an opportunity to decide how and when to assess students.
Gone is No Child Left Behind and many of its unpopular mandates, including the call for Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). Instead, states will identify long-term goals that are “ambitious” and include measures of interim progress.
“ESSA provides the opportunity to contemplate what is meant by ‘the whole child,’ and, from this, consider the type of programming that will support the strengths and needs of each and every child,” Tony Smith, state superintendent for education, wrote in a letter to Illinois residents.
He encourages stakeholders, including parents, teachers, principals, superintendents, community and business leaders, and legislators, to get involved and help craft the state’s plan.
A series of listening tours have been scheduled by the Illinois State Board of Education to explore and share ideas for Illinois’ ESSA plan. One is scheduled for 4:30-6:30 p.m. Sept. 26 at Lockport Township High School.
