At the October 25^th Board of Education meeting:
 

• The Board and Coach David Rush recognized a Homer Junior High School student athlete who finished 2nd at the Illinois Elementary School Association (IESA) State Golf Tournament in Peoria recently. The student, who competes on his own, plans to compete for the national title over Thanksgiving.

• Several parents, including Melissa Peterson, Kerrie Heeney, Missy Chandarana and Anthony Malito, addressed the Board and expressed disappointment that a contract settlement has not been reached with the Teachers Union. Some suggestions included: put the District’s resources toward teachers first and reach a settlement that will ensure retention of high quality teachers; cut administrative positions; implement additional student fees, such as a technology fee and/or fees to participate in after-school clubs.

• Teachers Union representative Cathy Clayton reported they have entered the mediation process with the Board of Education and have presented a proposal to the Board to consider. They expressed hope that the Board will support the proposal.

• Support Staff Union representative Susan Koziarski reported they stand by the teachers and hope a resolution can be reached soon in contract negotiations. They indicated the Support Staff Union will begin its own negotiations with the District soon.

• The Board approved the final audit for FY 2016, which was presented at the Board’s Finance and Operations Committee meeting on September 21, 2016

• The Board adopted a tentative levy for FY 2017. As discussed at the Board’s Finance and Operations Committee meeting on September 21, 2016, the District will seek a levy of 2.87 percent to make sure it captures all new construction. The levy is what governing bodies ask for — not what they receive. Last year, Homer 33C sought a levy of 2.75 percent and received 1.76 percent.

• President Wilson reported there will be several open positions on the School Board next year and that now is the time to begin researching how to run for an open seat.
