Fifth-graders learn about careers, airplanes with Pilot Dave
Set goals for their futures
Southwest Airlines pilot Dave DeNormandie shows students what the controls look like on a commercial airplane
A pilot from Southwest Airlines has inspired Hadley Middle School fifth-graders to set goals for themselves and think about the career paths they may want to pursue.
Dave DeNormandie, who flies for Southwest Airlines, has been working with students in Sharon Gallagher and Katie Farthing’s classes these past four weeks as part of the airline’s Adopt-A-Pilot program.
He spoke to students about his career, the education needed to become a pilot and how science, geography, math and writing are used in aviation.

He also led students through a series of activities, showing them how planes fly and how geography affects climate.
Students were eager to track the number of miles DeNormandie flew this past month and see photos that he took from the cockpit.
On DeNormandie’s last visit Thursday (March 2), students made paper airplanes that they tested for distance.
The goal of the Adopt-A-Pilot program is to help inspire students to define, articulate and plan for future success.
