HJH teacher wins Illinois Computing Educators “2017 Educator of the Year Award”
Honored at state conference

Shannon Schroeder, an English/Language Arts teacher at Homer Junior High School, has been named “2017 Educator of the Year” by Illinois Computing Educators (ICE).

She was honored at Illinois Computing Educators (ICE) State Conference, held Feb. 28 through March 3 in St. Charles.

“Your achievements are outstanding,” Lorie Jessup and Deb Thomson, co-chairs of the ICE Awards Committee, told Schroeder. “District 33C and Homer Junior High are extremely fortunate to have you as one of their English/Language Arts 8th grade teachers.”

Each year, Illinois Computing Educators (ICE) selects one classroom teacher and one technology administrator/specialist for this prestigious award.

Educators are nominated by colleagues, students and school administrators based on their outstanding contributions to the integration of technology and the improvement of teaching and learning in their school or district.

Once nominated, candidates must complete an extensive application process that is reviewed, evaluated and scored by members of the ICE Educator of the Year Committee.

Selections are then confirmed by the ICE Executive Board for final approval.

Schroeder, a 14-year veteran with Homer 33C, began integrating technology into her classroom in 2013 when she piloted Chromebooks for the district.

She has since become a technology leader in the district experimenting with new tools and techniques and then sharing what she learns at various workshops.

She recently earned her Google for Education Certified Trainer and is a Level 2 Google for Education Certified Teacher.

She has participated in EdTech Team’s Teacher Leader Cohort and presented at Google for Education Summits, ICE, Taste of Tech and NICE.

“I am truly honored to represent District 33C and Homer Junior High in this capacity,” said Schroeder. “I appreciate the opportunities for professional growth that have been supported by the district.”
