Two HJH history exhibits earn ribbons at Regional History Fair
One exhibit headed to Springfield
Two history exhibits by Homer Junior High School students earned high praise at the National Illinois Regional History Fair in DeKalb.
One exhibit,” Women in Architecture,” received a Ribbon of Excellence. The other exhibit, “Chicago World’s Fair,” received a Superior Ribbon.
Both exhibits were created in Homer’s History Club.
The exhibit on “Chicago World’s Fair” is now headed to Springfield for inclusion in the Illinois History Fair in May.
“We’re so proud of our students and the extra effort they put forth to create these exhibits,” said Homer Junior High School Social Studies teacher Penny Sierros, who started the school’s History Club nine years ago.
“It was the fulfillment of a need,” she explained.
Students who join History Club meet twice a month after school to discuss one of their favorite topics — history. Their main focus is creating exhibits and participating in the Illinois History Fair.
“It’s inspiring to see what they come up with each year and rewarding to see them advance to the state level,” said Sierros.
This is not the first time a Homer Junior High School student’s history exhibit has been selected for display at the state level. Last year, a student’s exhibit titled “Chicago: Hog Butcher of the World” was displayed at the Illinois History Fair after earning a Superior Ribbon.
“History helps students understand how people and societies behave,” said Sierros, who now co-chairs the school’s History Club with teacher Tim Oess.
“It’s important for students to know what influences have played a role in shaping our country,” she added.
The History Fair is supported by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.
