The Homer Subzero Heroes survive Polar Plunge
Raise $8,520.65 for Special Olympics Illinois

Eighteen Homer Junior High School staff members took the plunge — Polar Plunge, that is — to raise money for Special Olympics Illinois.

The team of educators (AKA “The Homer Subzero Heroes”) braved the cold and took an icy dip in Leisure Lake at Joliet’s Leisure Lake Resort on March 11.

Not only did they survive the 27 degree weather but raised a whopping $8,520.65 for Special Olympics Illinois. Their goal was to raise $5,000.

“It was cold, but absolutely worth it,” said 8th grade math co-teacher Brittany Konsoer.

“It was a truly amazing event and the amount of support was overwhelming,” she added. “The plunge was a great reason for us to come together to raise money for Special Olympics.”

Other team members included: Shannon Gentile, Allison Connolly, Janina Giantomasso, Alexis Hirsch, Nichole Boyce, Tiffani Stark, Erin Sagon, Diane Blaskey, Kendra Michalik, Maxine Pavlovich, Caroline Risum, Kelly Kardas, Stephanie Moore, Mary Kay Oldendorf, Amy Marzano, Sam Hoinacki and Marisa Lopez. Principal Troy Mitchell cheered them on from the sidelines.

Money raised by The Homer Subzero Heroes will enable athletes with intellectual disabilities to participate in Special Olympics programs.
