At the July 25th
Board of Education meeting:

Teachers Union representative Cathy Clayton expressed appreciation for having a financial
expert explain the key principles of Illinois school finance at the Board meetings
●
Support Staff Union representative Susan Koziarski reported the Union is once again working
on a charitable endeavor with the Junior Woman’s Club. Details will be shared in August

Ron McGrath from TRIA Architects reported a flood test was conducted at Butler School to
determine how and where water is entering the school during rainstorms. They discovered
water is entering through a roof louver and suggested the District remove the louver for further
examination and possible replacement. The Board agreed to move forward with the project
immediately. It is expected to take three to four weeks to complete at a cost of $10,000 to
$15,000

Nick Graal from TRIA Architects presented a detailed facility audit to the Board outlining
projects and repairs that need to be addressed throughout the District. Member Petrizzo and
Member DeSchaaf will now head a committee to map out a timeline for each project
●
The Board accepted the retirement of the following individuals subject to compliance with the
terms and conditions of the retirement incentive program:

The Board approved the sale of an easement along Bell Road (in front of Hadley Middle
School and Homer Junior High School) to Will County so that the road can be widened
●
The Board approved a resolution authorizing the sale of (39) 71-passenger school buses, (16)
30-passenger Special Education buses and (1) 2004 F250 Ford pickup truck
●
The Board voted to change its May 22, 2018 meeting to May 29, 2018
●
Communications/Public Relations Manager Charla Brautigam presented an update on Ross
School, the one-room schoolhouse at the entrance to Hadley Middle School and Homer Junior
High School. Contractors estimate it will cost $100,000 to repair and rebuild the school, which
dates back to the 1850s. The District reached out to more than a dozen area businesses
(including construction companies, roofers, landscapers and heating and cooling businesses)
and asked if they would assist by donating building materials or lending their expertise. Only
one company agreed to help: Will-Cook Ace Hardware, which offered to donate the paint and
painting supplies. In June, the District turned to Sandy Vasko, Director/President of the Will
County Historical Society and Chair of the Will County Preservation Commission, for advice.
She toured the school and suggested the District save the school by installing a new roof
immediately and applying for Landmark Status, making it eligible for grant money. The Board is
considering its options

Dr. Thomas Kersten, author of
Taking the Mystery Out of Illinois School Finance
, presented the
first of three informational programs on the principles of school finance. Teachers and
administrators who attend upcoming presentations will earn CPDU (Continuing Professional
Development Unit) credit.

The Board approved the hiring of Nathan Baldwin as the Assistant Principal at Schilling
School, effective August 1, 2017
