Executive Directors Message
The NRA rifle matches are over for the year, but before they ended, ISRA juniors Liam McKenna and Alex Vitous picked up two more junior championships. Liam McKenna won High Junior in the 1000-yard match and Alex Vitous won High Junior in the Palma Match. The Palma Match is shot at 800, 900, and 1000 yards.
The 2017 shooting season is starting to wind down and it is time to consider the 2018 shooting season. The ISRA is always interested in building junior shooters. Some colleges and universities offer scholarships to junior shooters who qualify with high enough scores. Athletic events require commitment, not only from the junior, but from their parents, grandparents and others who support them. Even if the junior shooter does not achieve those high levels, they will be introduced to a sport they can enjoy for the rest of their lives. The great news is you don’t have to be seven feet tall and weigh 300 pounds to be successful at it. Boys and girls can compete equally. If you have a junior boy or girl, let us know and we will try to help get them started. Watch the Thursday Bulletin for updates.
In October, the ISRA indoor air gun range will open. Shooting will be on Wednesdays from 5:00-9:00pm. Later on, we will try to open it on weekends.
I am always harping about training, particularly for Concealed Carry License holders. There are some great opportunities for training at the ISRA Range. On the inexpensive side, we have the IDPA and Combat League shoots on the first Sunday of the month, the Glock League on the last Sunday of the month, and the Springfield League is the third Sunday of August and September. Of course, some of the best training around is Massad Ayoob’s Mag-40 class. The Mag-40 class will be held at the ISRA Range on September 7, 8, 9, and 10. This class is not inexpensive, but it is definitely worth it. If you are an ISRA member (and why wouldn’t you be?), you can save $80 on the class. You can sign up for Massad’s Mag-40 class by clicking on the link. Classes like Mag-40, Mag-80, and others are what I like to call “immersion training”. In Mag-40, for four days you will likely be immersed in knowledge about the law, marksmanship, and practical application of firearms in self-defense. In my opinion, there is no better way to improve your knowledge and skills than through “immersion training”.
