Join forces with United Way to build a stronger community
Homer 33C teachers and staff are joining forces with United Way of Will County to build a stronger community for all.
Schilling School teacher and United Way Ambassador Terri Pellizzari is leading the charge, asking colleagues to skip a trip to their favorite coffeehouse each week and donate that money to United Way of Will County instead.
For $2 a week, you can help send a home-delivered meal to a senior citizen, fund an after-school program at the Boys & Girls Club or provide dental care to a family in need, she told a group of Schilling School teachers on Sept. 20.
She and United Way President & CEO Mike Hennessy are visiting all six Homer 33C schools this fall, encouraging teachers and staff to sign up for a voluntary payroll deduction and donate at least $2 per paycheck to the United Way of Will County.
“A few dollars can go a long way,” said Hennessy, explaining how donations are invested in programs, not agencies, that support Will County residents.
Among the 113 programs United Way of Will County funds are: a shelter for women who are victims of domestic violence and their children; a mobile dental unit for those in need; and a new program called Bags of Hope. The organization fills student backpacks full of a weekend’s worth of food so that when the students from Lockport, Joliet and Plainfield return to school Monday morning, they are ready to learn.
“No matter what need a student and their family may have, the chances are there is a program our local United Way is investing in,” said Hennessy.
“There is no contribution one can make that will have a greater impact on the residents of Will County than one’s contribution to our United Way of Will County,” he added.
