Tristan’s tulips earn Schilling School a Nature and Harmony Award
Recognized at village board meeting

A beautiful reminder of a Schilling School third-grader who passed away last year was honored Sept. 27 at a Village of Homer Glen board meeting.

Trustees presented the school with the village’s Nature and Harmony Award for planting tulip bulbs in front of the school in honor of their departed classmate, Tristan.

They were among 12 groups/individuals to be honored.

Accepting the award for the school were Principal Candis Gasa and the Tristan’s third-grade teacher, Tasha Ohotzke.

“We look forward to the tulips bringing a smile to everyone’s face each spring!” said Gasa.  Last year, there was one white tulip in a sea of color signifying our dear friend, Tristan.  I am glad our third grade students were able to spread beauty and be recognized by the Village of Homer Glen.”

Students planted the bulbs last November in memory of their buddy Tristan who passed away at the beginning of the 2016-17 school year.

Gasa told students at the time that the tulips would “hug” the school in the spring and remind them of Tristan and his friendship.

The gesture captured the attention of village officials who decided to honor the school with one of Homer Glen’s Nature and Harmony awards.

The Nature and Harmony Award recognizes individuals, businesses and organizations who, through the preservation, restoration and beautification of land within the Village of Homer Glen or unincorporated Homer Township, have demonstrated a commitment to the environment and, in the process, significantly contributed to community pride.
