Rep. Welter appointed Spokesperson on House Energy & Environment Committee
SPRINGFIELD – Serving three nuclear power plants and a natural gas facility in the most energy-oriented legislative district in Illinois, State Representative David Allen Welter, R-Morris, has been appointed Republican Spokesperson on the Energy & Environment Committee for the 2019-2021 legislative term. Welter’s district includes Exelon’s LaSalle County Generating Station, Dresden Generating Station in Grundy County, and Braidwood Generating Station in Will County as well as Dynegy’s natural gas generating facility in Kendall County.
The Spokesperson is responsible for leading the efforts of the minority caucus within each committee; including questioning witnesses who provide testimony at committee hearings, being the lead advocate for caucus positions on legislation assigned to that committee, and negotiating with the Committee Chairperson to reach bipartisan consensus on as many bills as possible.
“Serving as Spokesperson on the Energy & Environment Committee will enable me to play a leading role in legislation that impacts our local energy industry and the thousands of jobs they support in our community,” Welter said. “On the environment, I will work to preserve and strengthen the quality of our natural lands and state parks including Starved Rock in LaSalle County, Silver Springs in Kendall County, Channahon State Park in Will County, William G. Stratton in Morris, and the Des Plaines State Fish and Wildlife Area in Wilmington. I will also be a fierce advocate to ensure the state remains a responsible steward of clean air and safe water throughout our local ecosystem. We can achieve a lot over the next two years working with the new Governor and his administration on a bipartisan basis.”
Committee assignments for the 101st General Assembly were announced today as the Illinois House of Representatives prepares to reconvene on Tuesday, February 5. In addition to being named Spokesperson on Energy & Environment, Representative Welter has been appointed to serve on the committees on Public Utilities, Transportation: Vehicles & Safety, Public Safety Appropriations, State Government Administration, and Capital Appropriations.
