Welter signs on to Oppose Income Tax Hike on Illinois Families
SPRINGFIELD – State Representative David Allen Welter, R-Morris, has signed on to co-sponsor House Resolution 153today, legislation stating opposition to any measure that would allow for the creation of a graduated income tax on Illinois residents. Representative Welter issued the following statement after the Capitol press conference introducing the resolution:
“It is frustrating that the conversation in Springfield is always about how to raise taxes without ever considering reforms to state policies that would help attract jobs and grow our economy. Studies have shown that states with a graduated income tax create even more of a burden on the middle class and dissuade economic prosperity. While it is promoted as a means to provide fairness, the graduated income tax in reality punishes hard-working, middle-class families and small businesses that make up the majority of the tax base. The fact that Illinois has a flat tax is one positive we have going for us in terms of attracting new jobs to this state. A flat tax is a fair tax that treats all earners equally and ensures that upper earners carry a heavier burden. That’s why I oppose a Graduated Income Tax.”
All 44 members of the Illinois House Republican Caucus are co-sponsors of HR 153.
Representative Welter serves the 75th District, which includes portions of Kendall, Grundy, LaSalle and Will Counties.
