Will County State Republicans vote ‘No’ on LGBT education bill

Margo McDermed

The Illinois House passed a bill, along a largely party-line vote, requiring public school textbooks purchased with state money to highlight contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals to American history and culture.

Every member of the Republican caucus voted against the bill including local members Rep. Margo McDermed, R-Mokena, and Rep. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield.

In her regular newsletter, McDermed explained most of the members of the General Assembly “have no teaching or school administrative experience, yet the number of school mandates imposed by this body has skyrocketed. … Schools and teachers already struggle to keep up. This legislation continues the troubling trend of telling schools how to do their jobs.”
