Batinick Supports Bill to Reject Automatic Pay Increase
SPRINGFIELD—State Representative Mark Batinick (R-Plainfield) recently signed on as the chief-co sponsor of legislation to prevent automatic pay increases for Illinois lawmakers.
The legislation, HB3910, would phase out and end the General Assembly cost-of-living pay adjustments on or after July 1, 2020. Current law automatically authorizes a cost-of-living increase to the pay of state senators and representatives unless legislation is passed to reject it. This year, the House of Representatives did not consider such legislation, which resulted in a $1,600 pay increase for the General Assembly’s 177 members.
As a strong advocate for fiscal reform, Representative Batinick finds HB3910 to be a necessary procedural adjustment. “The current annual pay increase is automatic, according to current law,” said Batinick. “As lawmakers, this is something that we should be voting on. When it comes to the State of Illinois, anything that affects the fiscal picture or our taxpayer dollars needs to be considered. This law was initially adopted in 1980, and we cannot continue to accept this as the status quo.”
