Coal City awarded state grant for housing rehabilitation
COAL CITY– State Representatives David Allen Welter, R-Morris and Lindsay Parkhurst, R-Kankakee, announced today the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) awarded the Village of Coal City a total of $500,000 in Community Development Block Grants for housing rehabilitation.
“The people of Coal City are resilient and determined,” Representative Welter said. “With memories of the devastating EF-3 tornado in 2015 still fresh in our minds, this grant award will help rehabilitate housing in the community for both low and moderate-income homeowners and renters. I applaud Village officials for their diligent work going through the process of applying for this grant. I was proud to support them every step of the way.”
“This grant has a powerful impact for residents and local businesses here in Coal City by providing needed stability, spurring economic growth, and promoting opportunities to help Coal City succeed and recover from the devastating tornado.” Representative Parkhurst said.
The Community Development Block Grant program is one of the longest continuously run programs at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, operating since 1974. Although federally funded, DCEO administers the program and awards funds to support local community development activities such as affordable housing, anti-poverty programs, and infrastructure development.
