CONSTITUTIONAL CONVERSATIONS

Wandering the Great Ocean of Human Affairs

The title from a speech given by Patrick Henry who opposed ratifying the U.S. Constitution, 1788. Last week Miss Constitution’s column “Truth and Consequences” reminded readers of the importance of finding truth through validating facts. Here are the questions that Miss Constitution thinks need investigative reporting. I hope true journalists can find out for us:

  1. When did China know that the coronavirus could be transmitted from human to human and when did China report this finding to the World Health Organization?
  2. Between the time China knew and the time China reported did their leadership order hoarding and purchasing of vital Personal Protective Equipment from all over the world? Did China order that American manufacturers in China, like 3M, sell all equipment manufactured there to China itself and not to the United States, 3M’s home country?
  3. Is China now selling and/or donating the equipment it purchased or hoarded to other countries so that it can claim “humanitarian” motives when, in fact, it created the crisis in the first place? What were its motives for creating the crisis if it, in fact, did so?

As soon as we have factual and verified answers to these questions from a free American press protected under the 1st Amendment to the United States Constitution, we will be on the path to truth. This week’s column encourages us to think about the side rail we, as a country, might have taken and what the Sovereign thinks we should do about it if true.

While sheltering in place, Miss Constitution has had the luxury of quiet time to try and make sense of the number of realities that are coming at our people all at once that seem conflicting and discordant. Miss Constitution considers the Wuhan virus the equivalent of a meteor that has struck our planet bringing a halt to all we know. What is interesting is that the “freeze” has allowed us to examine some very important paths we are on as a nation and the efficacy of our governing structures in modern times. What has this freeze-frame shown us?

  1. Regardless of the behavior of some Americans, most have shown goodness
  2. Our Constitutional system works to some degree but the oil needs changing
  3. Going to bed with the devil does not change the devil it changes you

Many Americans, Miss Constitution includes herself, have gone to bed with the devil, so to speak, thinking they were strong enough to handle it and finding out they weren’t. Most recover their heads with the help of insight and prayer. As a nation, going back to the 1940’s and earlier, many of our political leaders, both Republican and Democrat, have given legitimacy to Communist totalitarian regimes and even elevated their status to Most Favored nations either literally or by practice. Bad idea. Communist totalitarian regimes did not change; they changed us. If these regimes were equivalent to a virus, they mutated to adapt to our systems while quietly and systematically corrupting their hosts. Some American politicians, corporate moguls, and academicians have ceded our nation to the unthinkable and scooped up, without shame, the thirty pieces of silver thrown their way.

Thanks to the virus and this artificial abeyance of time itself, we can see what has happened clearly. We can see that our entire drug supply is controlled by an avowed enemy. We can see that certain crucial systems parts needed for the defense machinery of the nation are controlled by an avowed enemy. We can see that our people have become addicted to cheap goods produced by the equivalent of slave labor. What would the Founders say? The Founders would be pleased at how the structure of Federalism that they invented is working. Our national and state and local governments are sharing responsibility mostly efficiently and mobilizing mostly quickly. The charitable sector, partner to the private and governmental sector, is rising to the occasion and helping ignite that spark of the good that is in each of us. Testing seems to be our biggest need.

What the Founders would not be pleased with is all the private jets clogging the small airports in the Hamptons, as New Yorkers, when asked to shelter in place, instead carry the highly contagious virus to new communities and suffering to new people because they have the wealth to do so. The Founders would not be pleased with the lack of honor seen in some Congressional politicians in Washington, DC, who would pack improper and unexamined pork into an emergency measure, meant to help small businesses and average people get through an historic crisis.

Miss Constitution has said that our Constitutional system needs an oil change. No engine can run on dirty oil. Clean oil is moral virtue in our Congressional leaders and civil servants. Our people are mostly good; our representatives are sometimes not but keep getting re-elected. Change the oil immediately! The Justice department should investigate Congressional insider trading. In addition, any private citizen with public influence who shorted the market to make money on the disaster we face should be the target of a Department of Justice investigation. The Founders’ assumption was that our country’s Congressional leaders would be honorable, successful, private sector persons. Instead, our Constitutional system is still running but spewing black smoke from its exhaust and everyone who drives past yells out the window, “Change your oil!”

Patrick Henry opposed ratifying the Constitution in 1788 because he thought it would lead to a federal takeover of power and a return to tyranny. We are wandering on the great ocean of human affairs, and the direction of our ship, like that of the hospital ship Comfort that left Norfolk, VA to assist New York in its hour of need, is up to us. Some of those in Congress simply can’t get out of bed with the devil; nor can those academics poisoning our precious children’s minds; nor can some private sector actors who justify selling out the country. We the People, as Sovereign, are going to have to take over the helm and safely bring her to port through what will be more difficult than conquering this virus, as the devil does not take kindly to letting go.
