The chairman of the Will County Republican Committee, a county board member and three business owners filed a federal lawsuit against Gov. JB Pritzker and the state, demanding payment for damages they say they suffered due to the COVID-19 state-at-home order.
“This is America,” said county Republican Committee Chairman George Pearson. “It’s about choices. That’s what I want people to take away from this.”
Pearson was joined by county board member Steve Balich in the suit, which was filed in the Northern District of Illinois Eastern Division Wednesday.
“I’m getting all these calls from business owners,” Balich said. “They’re on the verge of losing everything.”
The other plaintiffs were Samantha Palya, the owner of Absolutely Pawfect Pet Styling in Palos Hills, Amanda Hamerman, owner of Color Envy hair salon in Bolingbrook, and Michael Judge, owner of Judge Automotive in Oak Forest.
Palya has lost $45,000 in income during the shutdown, according to the lawsuit, and Hamerman lost more than $60,000.
Judge has “suffered a decline in his business due to restrictions on travel, and although open, has little or no business since other residents are restricted in their travel, not using their private automobiles, and therefore, not needing repairs,” the lawsuit said.
