A Fairmont Senior Gets an Earth Day Gift
High school students volunteer to clean property
JOLIET – An elderly resident of the Fairmont neighborhood in Will County Board District 9 received some much needed help cleaning up her property after she reached out to her County Board Representative Annette Parker (Crest Hill).
“People had unfortunately been dumping garbage on this resident’s property for some time and she was unable to remove the debris because of her age and health,” said Parker. “Many elderly people also don’t have the means to hire a cleanup service and so this resident asked if I knew of any help that might be available.”

Parker began to look for volunteers to assist in cleaning the property and she reached out to the Lockport Township High School Junior ROTC program to see if any students were interested in participating. About 20 junior ROTC cadets responded to the call and spent the day clearing debris from the yard which included half a dozen car tires, brush, and other garbage. April also happens to be Earth Month which was a happy coincidence.
“I’m so grateful for these young volunteers that stepped up to support one of their community members,” said Parker. “It was inspiring to see their generation volunteering. And the resident is thrilled with the help that she received. She would not have been able to clean this property without the support of these cadets.”
Local landscaping company Latin Pavers also volunteered a crew to clear overgrown trees and plants from the property.
