It’s an elaborate scheme…even for Illinois. Illinois’ government unions – already some of the nation’s most powerful – want even greater control over the state. Their goal is to expand and cement their bargaining rights and powers directly into the Illinois Constitution, making them virtually untouchable. That means more control over policy – whether it’s more spending on programs, the promotion of equity or what’s being taught in the classroom. Higher taxes, more injustice and even fewer parents’ rights will be the inevitable result. But amendments to the constitution have to be voted on by the public…and ultimate power is a hard sell. So Illinois’ government unions crafted a plan: Get legislators to put Amendment 1 on the Nov. 8 ballot, sell the amendment as something it’s not, and hope Illinoisans vote for it. And that’s the nastiest twist of the scheme. If the union plan succeeds, voters will have directly, if unwittingly, handed over control of Illinois. That’s why we titled our recent OpEd in the Wall Street Journal “Unions Ask Illinois Voters to Sign Over Control of the State.” That piece was part of our efforts to warn about Amendment 1, not just in Illinois, but nationwide. |
Government unions have long dominated Illinois. They are behind most of our major crises, whether it’s pensions or higher property taxes, disappearing parents’ rights or outlawed worker freedom. Amendment 1 is set to make all those things worse – and make reforms even harder. There’s just a few days left to learn about Amendment 1. Visit our Amendment 1 homepage and make sure you share it with others. You can also check out our Amendment 1 One-pager here. |
