Hadley Middle School hosts Disability Awareness Night
Hadley Middle School students and staff will take to the court Tuesday (Nov. 10) to raise money and awareness for athletes with disabilities.

The school, which has been learning about the challenges faced by people with disabilities, will host a wheelchair basketball game at 6:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium.

Tickets are $2 per person or $5 per family. Proceeds will benefit sports teams at the Lincolnway Special Recreation Association.

The Association, which has been providing adaptive and special recreation services for individuals with disabilities since 1976, was invited to “take over” Hadley’s P.E. classes for three days.

Students learned about the limitations and freedoms athletes with disabilities experience by using sports chairs and other equipment provided by the Special Recreation Association, said Linda McGinnis, Assistive Technology and Physically Health Impaired Specialist for Homer School District 33C.

Among the adapted sports students learned how to play were wheelchair basketball, seated volleyball and goalball — a game for the visually impaired.

The goal was to help students gain a better understanding of diversity and disabilities.

“We want them to experience what it’s like to play sports with limitations,” said Nora Skentzos, Director of Special Services for Homer 33C.

The learning activity culminates with the wheelchair basketball game Tuesday night.

China took another step to boost the yuan’s global usage, saying it will start direct trading with the Swiss franc, as the nation pushes its case for reserve-currency status at the International Monetary Fund.
The link will start on Tuesday, the China Foreign Exchange Trade System said in a statement, making the franc the seventh major currency that can bypass a conversion into the U.S. dollar and be directly exchanged for yuan. The rate will be allowed to fluctuate a maximum 5 percent on either side of a daily fixing, according to CFETS.
“This is an important step in strengthening bilateral economic and trade connections between China and Switzerland,” the People’s Bank of China said in a statement on its website on Monday. The link will help lower conversion costs and facilitate the use of both currencies in bilateral trade, it added.
The announcement, which confirmed an earlier report, comes as the IMF prepares to meet this month to review its Special Drawing Rights. The executive board of the Washington-based institution will gauge whether the Chinese currency has fulfilled the criterion of being “freely usable,” after rejecting its bid in 2010. The other major currencies that can be directly converted into yuan are the U.S., Australian and New Zealand dollars, the British pound, the Japanese yen and the euro.
The PBOC this year extended Switzerland a 50 billion yuan ($7.9 billion) quota under the Renminbi Qualified Foreign Institutional Investor program, which allows yuan raised offshore to be used to buy securities in China’s domestic markets. In 2014, the Swiss and Chinese central banks signed a three-year currency-swap agreement that can be used to borrow as much as 150 billion yuan.

Pushing back against the small town that bilks hapless residents for violating petty laws

In the St. Louis suburb of Pagedale, it’s hard to live without violating some small rule. If your curtains don’t match, if your porch light’s out or if you simply cross the street on the left-hand side of the crosswalk, you can be cited and fined — again and again and again.
The micromanaging efforts of the Missouri city leaders have resulted in thousands of petty cases for its municipal court and a flood of revenue for the city. There are 3,300 people in Pagedale. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Pagedale residents received 2,255 citations last year — “nearly two per household.”
The small city tops a long list of St. Louis-area towns whose ordinance enforcement rates have soared in recent years. Since 2010, Pagedale’s citation rate has increased 495 percent. Over the same period, Frontenac, on St. Louis’ west side, has seen an increase of 364 percent.
Anecdotes of zealous enforcement — as well as the burden it’s placed on citizens — read like accounts of tedious and chronic oppression, the stuff of Soviet-era backwater towns where little bureaucrats drowned their unhappiness in the perverse pleasure they could take in mistreating the handful of unlucky people under their charge.
From the Post-Dispatch:
Vincent Blount, 54, and Valarie Whitner, 55, have lived in Pagedale for 20 years. For at least the last seven, they’ve been battling Pagedale’s municipal court.
The couple say they’ve been ticketed for everything you can think of: high grass and peeling paint, an overgrown tree, not recycling and more.
“Every year. Every year,” said Blount, sighing. “They just got me again.”
The latest citation was for a tree limb that fell onto their garage during a winter storm, the couple said. They waited until their insurance company assessed the damage, then placed the chopped up limb on the empty city lot next door. Before a tree service could pick it up, the city’s housing and sanitation inspector arrived.
The couple explained the situation but said it didn’t matter. They received another ticket.
In April, the inspector sent a list of 17 demands for the property.
The couple were given a 30-day deadline to, among other things, add screens and curtains to the windows; remove a dead branch from a tree out back; replace a missing shingle; use weedkiller; finish repairing the garage; install a rear screen door.
The repairs cost money — money the couple have been using to pay the court. They pay $100 a month on a tab that has grown to $1,810. About $1,000 of that was due to nontraffic violations. They still have $800 to pay off.
Blount and Whitner both work full time — he at a container store; she at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
“We get by, but we don’t have all this money in the bank,” Blount said.
Compounding situations like Blount’s is the city’s mandatory appearance rule: You must go to court for every citation “because there’s no set fine to be paid by mail.” With so many citations to juggle, inevitable lapses have led to detention for Blount on four separate occasions. The detentions, reports the Post-Dispatch, lasted “a day or two each.”
Pagedale’s population is 90 percent black, so political opportunists who like to find racism lurking under every rock might even describe the law as racist — if they saw opportunity for themselves in doing so. They certainly saw plenty of opportunity three miles up the road in Ferguson, where social justice crusaders swarmed last year to capitalize on a police shooting.
But Pagedale’s abuse of its citizens is slow, incremental and — this is the key — too aligned with the statist cause for the left-wing outrage industry to galvanize in protest. So it’s up to the Institute for Justice (IJ), which has fought and won some significant pro bono litigation battles in which some government entity or other was crushing the little guy.

Bomb on Dollars
Posted on November 5, 2015 by Sam Rolley
The Federal Reserve and Treasury Department recently decided that pumping billions of U.S. dollars into the war-torn Iraqi economy might not be such a great idea after all. Why? Because, like non-interventionist and fiscal conservatives have been saying all along, that money flows straight through its intended recipients into the hands of Islamic extremists.
The U.S. has been propping up Iraq’s cash-dominated economy with massive inflows of American dollars — pulled from Iraq’s very own Fed account — since the U.S. invasion and overthrow of Saddam Hussein.
After toppling Saddam and rendering the dinar useless by devastating the Iraqi economy, the U.S. helped set up a Central Bank of Iraq that operates in the image of the U.S. fiat currency system and is funded largely by oil reserves.
The Fed has a similar arrangement set up with a number of other countries which tie up as much as two-thirds of the $1.3 trillion fiat dollars the U.S. has in circulation at any given time.
“The Federal Reserve seeks to accommodate other countries’ need to have access to their dollar deposits in the form of U.S. bank notes for legitimate purposes,” a Fed spokeswoman noted in a recent statement. “A number of central banks around the world, including the Central Bank of Iraq, maintain accounts at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and at times withdraw currency from their accounts.”
But Iraq poses a special problem brought on by U.S. failures in the country over the past decade. Toppling a government is pretty easy for America’s mighty military, but establishing any semblance of order and accountability with handpicked puppet governments has always been tough for U.S. officials.
It’s no different for the current puppet regime heading Iraq.
The Wall Street Journal explained recently how the U.S. dollars make their way into Iraq:
Foreign central banks hold dollars and can call on the Fed for currency distribution. The new $100 notes are flown to Baghdad after leaving a Fed facility in East Rutherford, N.J. In Baghdad, the bills are moved to the Iraqi central bank, where they are sold in daily auctions in which Iraqi financial firms request dollars that they pay for largely using dinars, the country’s currency.
Early on, U.S. concerns centered on roughly 2,000 financial firms called exchange houses, which are active participants in these auctions.
U.S. officials believe several of these Iraqi firms have ties to Islamic State and have deep concerns the exchange houses are being used as conduits of dollars to the group, said a U.S. official and another person familiar with the matter. While the U.S. inevitably loses control at some point over the dollars it sends abroad, the Fed is barred from sending cash to entities it knows will distribute it to U.S. enemies.
Let’s break that down. U.S. $100 bills hot off the press have for years been flown into Iraq where they are exchanged for dinars — which the U.S. made useless — by financial institutions with ties to the Islamic State terror group.
Sure, U.S. officials got around to quietly shutting off the terror dollar faucet over the summer, but not before $13.66 billion flowed into the country in 2014. That’s a lot of U.S. money. In fact, it’s three times more than the $3.85 billion shipped to Iraq in 2012.
U.S. officials have long wondered why simply lobbing dollars at Iraq hasn’t helped the country’s economy. But they have now discoveredthat the money isn’t making it to Iraqi businesses and markets but into the hands of the well-funded ISIS terror organization and even into Iran.
Still, the U.S. is allowing money to trickle into Iraq in smaller amounts because, as Daniel Glaser, assistant secretary for terrorist financing in the Treasury’s Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence (how’s that for a title?), put it: “From a counterterrorism perspective, it is not in our interest for there to be an economic crisis in Iraq derived from a lack of U.S. dollars.”
But there’s already an economic crisis in Iraq. And there’s already a terror problem in Iraq and throughout the Middle East — one U.S. foreign policy created and U.S. dollars are funding. If the American public doesn’t start pushing back, D.C. bureaucrats with titles like “assistant secretary for terrorist financing” are going to continue doing just that: financing terrorists.

Ranching Family Declared Terrorists, Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison

Message from the Bundy Family

Our Dear Friends,

Please read the letter (below) that our family has issued to Aware Citizens and Government Officials.

The Hammond family has been battered and abused by the federal government for over a decade. Now they have been declared as “terrorist” and sentenced to 5 years in prison. For what?…for claiming their water rights and using their ranch.

The father and son already spent unjust months in federal prison, now the 9th District Court “resentenced” them (double jeopardy) to 5 years, due to being “terrorist”. The federal attorneys and courts have been deceitful and full of corruption. They raided their homes taking the evidence needed to defend them selves, took their guns, and threatening the family physically if they continue to legally resist them. This is a tremendous injustice that the American people must not allow!

The Bundy family is determined to do what ever it takes to assist this good American family so they do not have to suffer unjust further punishments.

We will be sending an outline of the facts with in a day or two. Please stay informed about the Hammond Family and be prepared to act according to the prompting the Lord gives you.

Please forward this email to as many friends and family as possible.  We need to build awareness so that this injustice can be corrected.  Without your help we cannot right this wrong.

Thank You,
Ammon Bundy

From:  The Bundy Family

Our hearts and prayers go out to the Hammond family with deep empathy.  The magnitude of the injustices dealt to them is hard to comprehend.  Their once happy lives have been forever darkened with pains of corruptions.  The nature of their sentencing proves once again that justice is currently not found in the federal courts.  The Hammonds are a simple ranching family that for generations has cared for the land they lived upon.  Prescribed burns are a vital process in keeping the land healthy and productive in the area.  The BLM also performs prescribed burns and have let it get out of control many times, but never has it cost any federal agent hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines and years of life in prison.  The Hammonds prescribed a fire on their private property that moved to public land, they extinguished the fire themselves.  The courts found that the burn increased vegetation for the following years, and had a positive impact on the land.  With no authority or justification to prosecute, eleven years after the fire, federal attorneys have obtained judgment that the Hammonds are terrorists and must be punished severely for their actions.
The illegal predatory actions of federal agencies placing themselves as the sole beneficiaries of the land and resources must end or the people will stand in open resistance against it.  The collaboration between federal agencies and the federal courts is shameful and will continue to accelerate the peoples demand for justice.  The Hammond prosecution, and many offenses like it, solidify that the federal government is no longer an entity that functions for the benefit of the people.
We warn federal agencies, federal judges and all government officials that follow federal oppressive examples that the people are in unrest because of these types of actions.  The purpose of government is to protect the unalienable rights of the people, not to take them away.  It is the duty of the people to defend their God given rights if government fails to do so or turns to devour them.  Good, civil citizens wish only to live in tranquility and peace, but demand freedom while doing so.  We call upon you and all civil servants to effectuate the true purpose of government and change your actions as needed by fulfilling your sworn duty to the Constitution and ultimately to the People.
We further warn that the incarceration of the Hammond family will spawn serious civil unrest.  We advocate that all charges be dropped and that the Hammond family be allowed to return to the home and life that was so rudely interrupted.  The Hammond family has paid enough for this mistake, if any mistake at all. Further punishments to the Hammonds will require restitution upon those who inflict the injustices.
We call upon aware citizens and government officials to promote the protection and freedom of the Hammond family, and by so doing, maintaining the spirit of liberty that this beloved nation is built upon.
The Bundy Family

Carly Fiorina Faces Down The Hosts Of ‘The View’ About Their Comments About Her Face Being ‘Demented’

Remember how the “ladies” of The View made disparaging remarks about Carly Fiorina’s looks during one of the GOP debates? And how many people (including Carly) didn’t take too kindly to that?
Carly was on The View this morning to hold The View accountable for their remarks. And Whoopi Goldberg and the others were all “Oh hey – we’re comedians! Can’t you take a joke?”

If it was a joke, it was a pretty crappy one.

With The ‘Transgender’ Movement, Liberalism Has Finally Descended Into Total Madness
Nov. 5, 2015 1:00pm
The Department of Education is very good at demonstrating why it shouldn’t exist. It put on its most convincing display this week when it ruled — you know, like a court, except it’s not a court — that Illinois’ largest school district violated the “civil rights” of a gender-confused boy by not letting him use the girl’s locker room. The school district now has 30 days to force underage females to change in front of the “transgender” student, or it will lose funding. Clearly, this is the role our Founders envisioned for the federal government.
I have a few points I’d like to make about this case. Let’s go through them one by one. http://www.theblaze.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/lilaperry1.jpg

  1. Barack Obama is facilitating the sexual abuse of underage children.

This story is very similar to many others we’ve heard in recent months, but it sets itself apart somewhat because it’s the first time President Obama’s federal government has stepped in so definitively to coordinate the victimization of high school girls. And make no mistake, allowing a boy to change in front of girls, and requiring that girls change in front of him, is sexual abuse. The problem isn’t simply that non-”transgender” predators can easily pretend to be “transgender” in order to gain access to the women’s facilities — although that does happen and it is a completely unavoidable outcome – but that allowing any man of any persuasion to watch girls use the bathroom or change their clothes is appalling and exploitative. It doesn’t matter if the man is “transgender” or regular gender or quasigender or nongender or gendergender. If he’s a man, he doesn’t belong there. Period.
It’s not debatable. It’s not a matter that can be discussed among intelligent grown ups. There exists not a single morally or intellectually sound justification for this madness. I am often accused of being too harsh and too absolutist in my pronouncements on issues. Whether my gorilla in a China shop approach is always appropriate is another matter, but in this case, with this sort of thing, when dealing with the mind-numbing lunacies of “transgender” propaganda, I think every opponent should be adopting a hard-line stance. This is wrong. It’s demented. It’s evil. It’s dangerous. It’s abusive. Every argument in favor should be dismissed as the blathering nonsense it so clearly is.
Moreover, “transgenders” are men who struggle with mental illness and sexual perversion. Of all the men to permit in a girl’s locker room, one might argue that “transgenders” ought to be last on the list. Remember Lila Perry, the male “transgender” Missouri high school student who demanded, and was granted, the right to change and use the toilet with girls? A look at his own social media postings reveal that he is attracted to females (and males), and enjoys taking pictures of himself simulating explicit sexual acts. What sort of parent wouldn’t be concerned about a vulgar, hypersexual boy like that using the locker room with their daughter? What sort of government claims that a boy like that has a civil right to infringe on the privacy and security of girls?
The answers: neglectful parents and depraved, tyrannical governments.

  1. The homosexual/transgender lobby can never be appeased.

This Illinois case is incredible considering how far the school district went to accommodate the deluded young man. Administrators first changed the pronouns on official school records to reflect whatever sex the “transgender” is pretending to be. That wasn’t enough. They allowed boys to play on girl sports teams, needlessly endangering safety and providing an unfair advantage to the team with the cross dressing male. That wasn’t enough. They let “transgenders” use the bathrooms of their choice. That wasn’t enough. They even let the boy use the girl’s locker room. The only stipulation — the only attempt they made to offer the real girls some shred of privacy and decency — was to ask the boy to change and shower behind privacy curtains, which they had specially installed for him. That wasn’t enough.
The school, like most schools in the country, bent over backwards to grant enormous and unreasonable favors to a small and demanding branch of an already tiny demographic. They made girls give up their sport’s teams, their bathrooms, and most of their privacy in the locker room, but the one single concession they asked of the boy was that he use a curtain. It still was not enough. It is never enough.
In liberalism, there is simply no demand that can be made, no requirement that can be expected, no line of distinction that can be drawn where “transgenders” and homosexuals are concerned. They must be given everything. Everything. And it’s never enough.
This is what the marriage fight was all about. Many states had already offered homosexuals an arrangement that would carry all of the same legal benefits as marriage, just without the title. But it wasn’t enough. Most homosexuals aren’t even interested in monogamous relationships, but they wanted access to marriage — marriage itself, not something close to it — because, well, just because. Because it’s never enough.
This also explains the fights over weddings cakes and photography and floral shops. Homosexuals can go basically anywhere and get a cake, or hire a photographer, or buy flowers, but if they encounter one business — just one, in a sea of other businesses — that wishes to refrain from being involved in gay “wedding” ceremonies, they must force it to comply or see that it is destroyed. It’s not enough to simply go somewhere else. It’s never enough.

  1. The homosexual/transgender lobby dominates and controls liberalism.

It’s really a remarkable thing. Liberalism is the prominent ideology in America,  yet it is ultimately dominated by the most quantitatively insignificant group on the planet. Homosexuals are already a relatively rare breed, and “transgenders” are even more scarce. There are a handful of gender-confused people in this country, but their demands and desires trump everyone’s, including even the desires of the feminists who used to rule the liberal roost.
(AP Photo/Danny Johnston)GAY Lesbian Transgenter Flag
Feminists are the matriarchs of modern liberalism, and now they are watching as their movement dies, not by the hands of conservative Christians, but by gay men in dresses. Men are now barging their way into the female ranks and claiming not only membership, butheadship, and feminists are required to shut up and cooperate. A few weeks ago, Glamour magazine declared Bruce Jenner “Woman of the Year.” Feminists were forced to applaud as a man was awarded the title of best woman. And most heroic woman. And most heralded, most admired, most womanly woman of all.
For years, feminists have insisted that they can do everything as well as men. Today, they must sit quietly while the gay lobby explains that, on the contrary, they can’t even be women as well as men. The mainstream acceptance of radical feminist theory has been, up until this point, one of liberalism’s great achievements. And now it’s all been tossed out for the sake of a population that barely exists. If there is a war on women, this is where it’s being waged.

  1. With “transgenderism,” the left has finally jumped the shark.

Transgender
The phrase “jump the shark” comes from the infamous “Happy Days” episode where the Fonze dons a leather jacket and a pair of water skis and literally jumps over a shark. Now it’s come to describe the moment where any TV show exhausts all of its plots and story arches and has to resort to ridiculous and desperate measures to keep its audience entertained. Often, when a show jumps the shark, it begins to undo previously established plot lines and betray the development of its characters, quickly becoming something entirely divorced from what it was back when it still had new ideas.
Once a show has done everything else, all that’s left is jumping the shark. The question, then, is whether the viewers will abandon the show, or just keep watching anyway.  If they stay, it will continue indefinitely, jumping new sharks every episode, and never going off air because its audience has made clear that it will accept whatever bunk the show dumps on them (see: “The Simpsons”).
This is the situation liberalism is in at the present moment. Some might say it jumped the shark many years ago, back when it fought for and won the right to murder infant children, but that was actually the birth of modern liberalism. The invention of “transgenderism” could be its death, or its rebirth into something even more depraved and destructive and indestructible than it was before. The outcome remains to be seen.
Liberalism has run out of battle grounds. It’s run out of things to say. But because it is, at its core, a deception, it cannot remain still. It must “progress,” in the sense that it must always run left, even when it appears to have run out of room.
Compare this with Christianity. Traditional Christians have been making the same points, taking the same stands, saying the same things, teaching the same moral lessons, and fighting for the same values and the same truths for 2,000 years. Christianity is immovable because it is eternal. Christianity does not invent new causes, because its one and only cause has always been truth, and truth never changes. While the liberalism of today sounds significantly different from the liberalism of six years ago, the Christianity of today sounds exactly the same as the Christianity of 600 years ago or 1,000 years ago. Christians must defend the truth against new attacks, but the truth itself, that which is being defended, remains steady, present, and alive.
Liberalism has no truth at its foundation, so it can only keep moving. Christians live in a house built on rock, but liberals have no house at all. They are ideological nomads, wandering ever further into the abyss. With ”transgenderism,” there is some evidence that liberalism has wandered a bridge too far. Unlike some of their other ideas, they have absolutely no defense here. Not only does “transgender” propaganda undo many of their own positions, but it makes a proposition that can only be accepted by those already fully indoctrinated into the liberal religion.

Despite what they might say, there is no rational argument to support the notion that men can be women so long as they feel like women. There is no scientific proof. No evidence. Nothing. It’s a total fantasy bearing no resemblance to reality whatsoever. To make matters worse for them, they can’t even use their usual “well, maybe what we’re saying is total hogwash, but it has nothing to do with you anyway” argument. After all, they’re insisting that the we facilitate the “transgender” delusion by permitting penis-bearing men to de-robe in front of women, and that we participate in it by playing along and using the correct pronouns and even funding “gender reassignment surgery.” They want all of us to take specific action to accommodate this group. It does, therefore, affect us.
They can’t explain the argument, and they can’t argue that their argument is of no concern to us. All they can do is present the concept as a matter of faith, and hope their fellow believers will follow along.
But not every liberal is a stage four liberal. Some are still out on the edges, only partially programmed. Hoisting this “transgender” stuff on them is like Scientology telling you about the galactic Lord Xenu the moment you walk in the building to ask for a brochure. Scientologists smartly wait to reveal the whole space lord shtick until their adherents have almost entirely bought into all of the requisite doctrines. Nominal Scientologists are still clear thinking enough to run for the hills the moment the Xenu myth is broached. Are nominal liberals clear thinking enough to run for the hills at the “transgender” myth?
That doesn’t appear to be the case, although there have been some reassuring signs, like just this week when Houston voted down an ordinance that would have allowed cross dressing men to use women’s public restrooms. But we’re far from being able to call this a loss for liberalism. For one thing, the institutions — government, academia, media —  have taken on “transgender acceptance” as their next great project. For another, the only reason liberals are fighting tooth and nail over where gender-confused boys use the potty is that they’ve already won every other contest. Finally, this is a generational play. Liberal baby boomers might resist the “transgender” fantasy, but in my generation, half of us are currently on board. Liberalism has won the majority of millennials over on nearly every point of their dogma, and on “transgenderism” — their most incredible and preposterous – they’ve already convinced half of us, and it only took, like, 12 seconds.
I struggle to be optimistic for the future.

  1. Liberals are waging a war on reality.

Liberalism has officially severed itself from any semblance of reality, and indeed declared war upon it. If our culture cooperates; if we relent and concede that science is relative and human beings are gods who can choose their own biological makeup; if the left jumps over the shark and into the dark waters of full fledged insanity, and many in our society take the plunge right along with it, then there will be no stopping liberalism. It will have won the culture irreversibly.
If we willingly forfeit the definition of “man” and “woman,” right after forfeiting the definition of marriage, and long after forfeiting the definition of human life, then we will have no basis left to oppose anything else liberalism tries to do. We will have given it everything, ceded its every demand, compromised on every single imaginable point, and that will be the end of it. All we’ll be able to do, then, is sit and wait for our civilization to eat itself and collapse into dust.
We either draw a line here and make a final stand for objective truth — declaring without equivocation that some things, like our sex, are real and absolute — or else we give up and play along and tell ourselves that truth never mattered all that much anyway.
I have no real confidence that, as a culture, we’ll choose truth. But if it’s ever going to happen, now’s the time. Liberals have made it clear that they intend to finally and categorically reject and outlaw reality itself. Now the question is: will the rest of us stand up and do anything about it?
I hope so. But unlike liberals, I’m a realist, so I’m praying but I’m not holding my breath.

Putin joins the EU in declaring war on American data centers

Putin
Traditionally the US has been the world’s powerhouse for Internet data centers. We are the global hub of the Internet, and people put servers here. That’s been great for freedom on the Internet, since we don’t censor and strongarm like other countries do.
Well, thanks to Edward Snowden’s propaganda, that’s changing. Russia is demanding that data be stored in Russia, where Putin can gain control, mimicing a similar move by the European Union.

Data centers are the heart of the Internet. Every big Internet company you’ve heard of has computers tucked into them, or builds their own equivalents. These computers store data about users and customers. That’s probably the second most important thing they do, after supplying Web and other Internet interfaces.
So when Putin’s Russia and the European Union are both writing or changing the laws, in order to ban American data centers from hosting data about Russians or European Union member citizens, that has two major effects, neither of which are good.
The first effect is that instead of being under American law (and therefore subject to the alleged abuses in Snowden’s propaganda), these servers will be under EU law and Russian law, and subject to abuses nobody’s talking about. This is bad news for the privacy of anyone whose data is on these servers. The US Government was only looking for Al Qaeda and allies. Putin and the EU are likely to have broader aims.
The second effect is economic. It’s pure protectionism. These laws have the effect of hindering free trade in data centers, subsidizing domestic data center industries. Naturally this is a way that these laws get domestic support: it’s another case of the regulatory-industrial complex in action, as the government picks winners and losers.
So what do we do about it? First, we need the government to recognize that this a big deal, to have an open, lightly-regulated Internet. Next, we need to use the free trade bodies we have, to challenge these restrictions, and find ways to penalize these countries for their anti-American steps, in ways that don’t harm America.
That is, don’t just slap on tariffs ourselves. That just raises taxes on Americans. We need to tailor our payback in ways that hurt them, the elites in Europe and Russia, in a way that’s diplomatically and logistically feasible. Sadly I see no evidence Barack Obama is interested in getting off the golf course even to try.

Treasury has had to use accounting gimmicks to circumvent the law

Who’s to blame for this?

Uncle Sam
The U.S. national debt ceiling had been frozen at just over $18.1 trillion. Since late January of this year, the Treasury has had to take “extraordinary measures” to keep the ceiling from being breached.
In regular English, this means the Treasury has had to use accounting gimmicks to circumvent the law. Since Congress did not have the political willpower to either raise the debt ceiling or actually balance the budget, this is what we were left with.
On Monday, Obama signed legislation that suspended the debt ceiling again. You could say this was a bipartisan effort to stock-photo-young-couple-with-baby-having-quarrel-about-financial-problems-focus-on-woman-299044637effectively nullify any notion of a debt ceiling for a while. And John Boehner (and now Paul Ryan) and the Republican establishment wonder why Republican voters are frustrated with their own party.
According to the Treasury, the national debt was frozen at $18.153 trillion last week. On Monday, it reached $18.492 and is now well over $18.5 trillion. In other words, the official national debt jumped by about $339 billion in one day.
The U.S. Treasury plays these accounting games to officially stay in compliance by borrowing money from other places — such as government pension funds. The entire government is just one big cycle of borrowing and kicking the can.
Imagine if a private company borrowed from its employees’ pension funds in order to meet its daily expenses. The executives might be facing jail time if they weren’t politically connected enough.
The U.S. government’s debt is fast approaching $20 trillion. Obama should be able to get out of office in time before it crosses that mark. Unbelievably, Obama took office shortly after the debt crossed the $10 trillion mark.
The U.S. national debt figure does not include the massive unfunded liabilities, which some estimates put as high as $200 trillion. These are not official debts but promises that have been made. It is mostly made up of Medicare, and then Social Security, but it also includes government pensions.
The national debt does include about $5 trillion in intragovernmental holdings, which is money that the government owes to itself. The biggest part of this debt is owed to the Social Security Trust Fund, which is essentially nothing more than a filing cabinet with a bunch of IOUs in it.

The Debt vs. the Deficit
The terms “debt” and “deficit” are used in a rather sneaky way by politicians. The debt is the total amount that the government owes to other parties. The deficit is the annual shortfall of funds. The annual deficit gets added to the total debt.
When we hear someone (such as Obama) brag about reducing the deficit, he is merely bragging about slowing the rate of increase of the overall debt.
Imagine a family with $50,000 of credit card debt. They have been accumulating $10,000 per year in additional debt. Then one day, the father comes home and says, “I have some good news, everybody. We have cut our deficit in half. Our annual deficit is now only $5,000. We have really improved our financial management.”
Do you see the problem here? Instead of adding $10,000 per year in new debt, the family is now adding “only” $5,000 per year. So next year, the family will have $55,000 in credit card debt.
Nobody should be celebrating a reduction in the deficit because it is still a deficit. It is adding more debt. The whole idea is to stop accumulating debt and then to find ways to reduce it. You can celebrate a reduction in debt, not a reduction in the deficit.
The debt ceiling is basically a joke because it does nothing to prevent Congress from spending more money. Still, these suspensions of the debt limit are the worst. It is better that Congress and the president have to actually raise it to a specific number. It is better to see them go through some political pain.
The national debt first crossed the $1 trillion barrier under the Reagan administration. While Reagan has a reputation as a fiscal conservative, the total government debt ballooned over his eight years in office. In those days, a $200 billion deficit was almost extreme.
Now we have seen trillion-dollar deficits since the fall of 2008. Now that it is “only” in the $300 billion to $400 billion range, it almost seems like a success. But we have to remember that the debt is still growing a lot, even if not quite as quickly as before.
Who’s to Blame?
It is obvious that the politicians in Washington, D.C. are to blame, along with lobbyists and other cronies. We also can’t leave out the Federal Reserve, which enables the U.S. government to take on much more debt than would otherwise be possible.
The central banks in Japan and China each hold well in excess of $1 trillion in U.S. government debt. But these countries are not to be blamed for this. The U.S. Treasury likes the fact that other countries are willing to buy the debt at low interest rates.
While the politicians and all of the cronies seek to benefit by the government continually racking up more and more debt, we can’t lay all of the blame on them. At some point, we do have to hold the American people accountable.
In poll after poll, Americans say they want lower taxes. They say they want less spending. They say they want a balanced budget. But as soon as it comes to specifics, it is somebody else’s program that should be cut. “Don’t cut my precious government program.”
About two-thirds of the national budget is made up of military spending and so-called entitlement programs. It is almost impossible to get a balanced budget without touching these items at all. But the Republicans can’t even defund Planned Parenthood, which is a miniscule drop in the bucket, so what hope is there of defunding anything at all?
Until a large segment of the American population starts pressing for specific and significant cuts, we are not going to see a balanced budget.

A Day of Reckoning
There is one other way that the budget will be balanced, but it isn’t going to be pretty when it happens. The laws of economics will finally be too strong of a power for the continued deficits.
The U.S. government has had a bit of free ride. China, Japan, and other foreign central banks have helped buy up debt. Investors still buy U.S. debt as something of a safe haven. And we know the Fed buys up debt when it is in monetary expansion mode.
It is rather unbelievable that the debt-to-GDP exceeds 100%. And interest rates are still near all-time lows. Japan is even more unbelievable with a debt-to-GDP well over 200%. The Japanese people feel some kind of patriotic duty to buy up their government’s debt.
When things go on for a while, we tend to think they will last forever. Most people cannot remember a time of double-digit interest rates. They can’t remember a time of high price inflation. They can barely remember when mortgage rates were at 6%, which was actually considered low at that time.
But this does not mean the current situation can just go on forever. That is the hope of the politicians and bankers who benefit from the corrupt system. Still, there is going to be a day when the U.S. government cannot sell its debt at low interest rates, and the Fed may not always be a willing buyer if we ever see price inflation get out of control.
As I mentioned, U.S. Treasuries and bonds are considered a safe haven. There is really no other instrument more trusted in the financial world. If we hit another major economic downturn, interest rates may fall even further. That is why I am still not advocating that anyone short the bond market — at least not yet.
A country cannot have its government just keep racking up debt with no consequences. There are already consequences in the form of lower growth and production. When the government spends money — as opposed to money being spent, saved, or invested by individuals and businesses — it misallocates resources.
So while government debt hurts future generations, it also hurts today. It is making everyone poorer today.
Despite what the Keynesians say, increasing government spending does not help the economy. It is the opposite. A reduction in spending would be helpful to the average American.
Unfortunately, it looks like we will only get a significant reduction in government spending when it can no longer sell its debt at low interest rates. It will be a painful period that we should be prepared for.
There will be a time to short bonds and bet on higher interest rates. We are just not there yet.
Until next time,
