At the July 26th Board of Education meeting:

  • Non-certified union representative Susan Koziarski reported the group has formed a Charity Committee and is holding a Back to School Supply Drive in collaboration with the Homer Glen Junior Woman’s Club. Supplies, such as crayons, washable markers and glue sticks, may be dropped off at any Homer 33C school. The drive will benefit Homer 33C students at all grade levels.

  • The Board recognized Butler School students for their fundraising efforts to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The fundraiser was organized by two fourth-graders (now fifth-graders) who shared the video they created to elicit donations. (Click here to view the video). The students raised $1,070.03 for the research hospital — more than double their original goal.

  • Superintendent Kara Coglianese recognized Countryside Bank for its generous donation of two Kindle Fires to the District. The tablets can be used in the classrooms to help students practice their letters, numbers and spelling through educational games. Presenting the tablets to the District was bank Branch Manager Barbara Iovinelli.

  • Teachers union representative Cathy Clayton reported negotiations have been underway with the District since May and that the group hopes to have a contract settlement soon. Even if an agreement cannot be reached by the first day of school August 22nd, the teachers are ready to start the school year, she said, and provide students with the best educational experience.
