Butler School students raise $1,070.03 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

Butler School students have big hearts and understand the value of helping others.

After hearing about the work St. Jude does to treat and defeat childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases, two fourth-graders took it upon themselves to start a fundraising campaign at the end of the 2015-16 school year.

They created an informational video, sharing stories about some of the children receiving treatment at St. Jude, and shared it with their classmates.

“At first, we didn’t think we would have enough time (to complete the fundraiser),” the students told the Board of Education on July 26.

But by the time school closed on June 3, they had raised $1,070.03 for the children’s research hospital — more than double their original goal of $500.

“They did all of this themselves,” said Butler School Principal Melissa Onesto who accompanied students to the Board of Education meeting where they shared their informational video and story.

“Thank you very much for an outstanding job,” Board President Barb Wilson told the students before presenting each one with a certificate.

Part of Butler School’s mission is to inspire students to become more globally aware citizens and show that their school CARES. That is:
