Illinois’ Heroin Crisis Act – What it Means for You
2016 Hero Helps Community Forum to address new law
Heroin continues to plague communities across the state of Illinois. In 2015, nearly 700 people died of heroin overdose (according to the Illinois Department of Public Health). To fight this horrible epidemic, the Illinois General Assembly passed the Heroin Crisis Act in May 2015 that addresses specific strategies.
On Friday, April 29, the fifth annual Hero Helps Community Forum will address this new law and experts from numerous state agencies will be on hand to discuss how the law will be implemented. The forum is sponsored by H.E.R.O. (Heroin Epidemic Relief Organization), Will County HELPS (Heroin Education Leads to Preventative Solutions), the Southwest Coalition for Substance Abuse Issues and the Village of Romeoville.
Topics addressed during the forum include medication disposal, prescribing requirements, availability of Naloxone, overdose reporting requirements, and public awareness.
In addition to the forum, a resource fair featuring 30 organizations will be present. These organizations include treatment providers, educators, and grassroots family support groups. Up to four FREE continuing education credits will be available to substance use prevention and treatment professionals, healthcare professionals, social workers, and educators.
