Homer 33C teachers prepare for new year

The countdown to the 2016-17 school year is on!

The classrooms have been cleaned and polished, giving teachers a few weeks to unpack, organize and decorate.

Schilling School kindergarten teacher Jen Gesiakowski fills student cubbies with learning materials and supplies in anticipation of the first day of school on Aug. 22

“It will all be done in time for the Open House,” said Young School teacher Ellen Buckley as she began unpacking new learning materials and transforming her classroom into a Royal Adventure, complete with castle and drawbridge.

Young School teacher Ellen Buckley (left) and paraprofessional Vivienne Stapleton construct a castle from styrofoam sheets. Read-A-Lot Castle will provide a cozy nook for students to read in this school year.

“It’s just a fun way to get them motivated,” said Buckley, who enlisted the help of paraprofessional Vivienne Stapleton to create the castle.

Every other year, Buckley comes up with a new theme for her classroom. Last year, it was a lighthouse that students crawled into for a little reading enjoyment.

Butler School teacher Karen McNabb organizes books that her first-grade students will be reading this year
