Host special Veterans Day program for those who served
Butler School students paid tribute to the men and women who have served our country by honoring them at a special Veterans Day program at the school.
About 80 veterans attended the ceremony, including parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts and uncles of Butler School students and staff.
Veteran James Comoda and his service dog, Maxx, were among those in attendance at Butler School’s Veterans Day celebration on Nov. 11.
“Thank you for our service,” Principal Melissa Onesto told the group of veterans before turning to students and encouraging them to thank the servicemen and women for their courage and sacrifice on a regular basis — and not just on Veterans Day.
“Because of them, we have the freedoms we enjoy,” she said.
The school sent letters home with students a few weeks back inviting family members who served in the Armed Forces to attend a special Veterans Day program at the school Nov. 11.
Students from each grade level took turns thanking the veterans for their service and sacrifice by singing patriotic songs to them or reciting poetry.

But first, they led everyone in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance with second-graders in Eileen Schulz’s class using sign language.
Next they sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” together and listened as Onesto read the names of each veteran in the room.
Joining the celebration was a representative from War Dogs Making it Home, a non-profit organization that helps veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder by pairing them with a service dog to train.
Veteran James Comoda brought his service dog, Maxx, to the celebration and explained how the canine helps soothe him in uncomfortable situations.
“He keeps me grounded,” he said.
Students plan to show their appreciation for veterans by taking up a collection next week for War Dogs Making it Home.
The Dollars for Dogs campaign starts next week.
