Butler School students weigh in on their favorite books

Butler School students have strong opinions about the books they read in the school library.

They recently shared those opinions with the Illinois School Library Media Association by participating in The Monarch Award: Illinois’ K-3 Readers’ Choice Award.

Students took turns voting for their favorite book by filing into actual voting booths sent over by the Will County Clerk’s Office.

They used Chromebooks to cast their electronic ballots, which were created using Google Forms. Afterward, they were given an “I Voted” sticker to wear proudly around school.

“The Monarch award is designed to encourage children to read critically and become familiar with children’s books, authors and illustrators,” explained Library Media Professional Barbara Logsdon, who will tally the votes and submit them to the State.

Students will learn which book receives The Monarch Award in the spring.

They began reading the 20 Monarch-nominated books in September and finished the last one just before Election Day on Feb. 9.
