Putting STEM skills to the test
Schilling School 4th graders challenged to create candy heart chute
Schilling School fourth-graders are putting their science, technology, engineering and math skills to the test.
While learning about the simple machine: the inclined plane, they were challenged to create a mechanism that would deliver candy hearts from the top floor to the bottom floor of their Candy Heart Company factory.
Students were given a paper, tape and a few other materials to work with as well as a time frame in which to work.
“They had to test, evaluate, reflect and improve their designs while collaborating with their group members,” said fourth-grade teacher Alisha Neil.
The end product was a paper chute that when placed at just the right incline, would safely and efficiently deliver the candy hearts from one floor to another.
