Valentine greetings shared across the country
Students hear back from classrooms in New York, Florida and California

All eyes were on the mailman this month as Schilling School second-graders eagerly waited to see if their Valentine’s Day greetings were acknowledged.

Students in Donna Gritzman’s second-grade class made 22 paper hearts (one for each child), which were then mailed to 22 schools across the country.

Each heart contained a letter about their classroom, school and community.

“I originally saw this idea on a Facebook teacher group I participate in,” said Gritzman, “and thought it was a really great way to reach out to other second-grade classes across the United States.”

Students crafted their hearts and letter in early February and mailed them on Feb. 3.

So far, they have heard back from 16 schools, including schools from New York, Florida and California.

“My students have really enjoyed learning about other schools,” said Gritzman, who would read each letter aloud as they arrived.

Afterward, students would plot where each one came from by adding a heart sticker to their U.S. map.
