Hadley Middle School students deliver donated school supplies to Joliet preschool
Practice their Spanish-speaking skills with bilingual preschoolers
Hadley Middle School students visited a Joliet preschool on Feb. 24, delivering school supplies and word books they created in Spanish class.
“Hola,” the sixth-graders told students as they paired up to read from the laminated word books.
“A lot of the kids seem to be really happy with it,” said one Hadley sixth-grader. “They have big smiles on their faces.”
The middle school “adopted” the non-profit Vilaseca Josephine Center (VJC) preschool earlier this year and began collecting items to help it build a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) curriculum that guides student inquiry, dialogue and critical thinking.
Their goal is to help the preschool to become a 21st century learning center.
So far, they have:
- Created a bilingual website for the center
- Created and donated flyers
- Partnered with Homer 33C’s technology department to donate recycled technology
- Created bilingual learning books for each VJC student
“Most of the students (at VJC) come from modest homes and many of the students do not speak English,” explained one Hadley sixth-grader.
“The center stays open by individual donations and through funding by the United Way,” added another.
Under the direction of Hadley Principal Kristen Schroeder and Student Council Sponsor Alison Pikus, the Student Council launched a campaign in November to raise money and supplies for the school.
They placed collection boxes at each of the Homer 33C schools and invited students and their families to donate school supplies, learning games and technology items, such as iPads.
They also asked Homer 33C employees to donate to the center on a regular basis by signing up for a payroll deduction to the United Way.
Their goal is to raise $45,000 annually.
