Batinick Statement: Arroyo Resignation

PLAINFIELD–Today State Representative Luis Arroyo (D-Chicago) resigned from office amid federal bribery charges.  The Representative was arrested on October 25th, but today tendered his resignation from the House of Representatives.

State Representative Mark Batinick (R-Plainfield) released the following statement in response to the resignation, which came hours before a House Special Investigative Committee would begin their official investigation into his actions.

“Today’s news is a sad justification that we need true ethics reform in Illinois.  This investigation has overshadowed progress in the statehouse the last few weeks, and now it’s time to get back to work, and move forward on behalf of the people we represent.  The best way we can do that and win back the trust of Illinoisans is by following through with tougher ethics laws.  I am supporting a variety of different pieces of legislation that will make our laws more thorough to ensure there is no place for bribery, or any kind of public corruption in our government.”

Representative Batinick is co-sponsoring HJR87, which will create a State Ethics Task Force, HB361 to increase penalties for ethics violations, HB3947 which would ban lawmakers from lobbying local governments, and HB3940 to ban sweepstakes gambling machines.  All of those bills remain in the House Rules Committee.
