Rep. Parkhurst Pushes for Ethics Reform in Springfield
Kankakee – During the first week of Veto Session, State Representative Lindsay Parkhurst (R – Kankakee) sponsored several pieces of legislation to push for ethics reform in Springfield. The legislation includes HB 361, HB 3947, and HJR 87.
“It is no secret the public trust in our state government is notoriously low,” Rep. Parkhurst stated. “When this occurs, it is our duty to re-examine our laws and rebuild public trust in our government. These bills introduced by my colleagues are a first step to cleaning corruption in Springfield.”
The General Assembly has been recently the target of various federal law enforcement activity, which includes the arrest of Representative Arroyo on the first day of Veto Session for public corruption and the federal indictment of Senator Tom Cullerton in August for embezzlement.
HB 361 introduces penalties for members of the general assembly who violate government ethics laws.
HB 3947 bans legislators and family members to be compensating for lobbying any level of government in Illinois.
HJR 87 creates a task force to examine Illinois government ethics laws and to make recommendations to the general assembly.
“The time has come for real ethical reforms in Illinois. We cannot stand idly by as our laws allow legislators to do what is clearly unethical,” Rep. Parkhurst continued.
HB 361 and HB 3947 are in the House Rules Committee. HJR 87 is assigned the House Executive Committee.
