Thomas McCullagh, Republican State Senate Candidate, Issues a Statement Regarding COVID-19 and the Reopening of the State of Illinois.

It is my opinion that beginning the opening of Illinois is essential and an immediate necessity. There must be certain actions that the State of Illinois and the Governor must take to achieve a safe and successful opening.

First, the State of Illinois should never mandate mask usage or any other unconstitutional requirements on its citizens. The state should instead launch a public awareness campaign that focuses on strongly suggesting the wearing of masks, hand washing and sanitization, then follow up with locations and companies that have PPE and sanitizer for sale and how to safely obtain it. The state should use all available public communication methods to distribute its recommendations.

Furthermore, the state should not recommend the use of gloves in public because people are not as conscious of what they touch when they wear gloves.

Second, have the Illinois Department of Public Health, in coordination with county health departments, issue a requirement for all businesses performing work in the State of Illinois to have a mask use policy, a sanitization policy and a social distancing policy in place, and internal enforcement of those policies. The IDPH and county health departments should also make resources available to provide businesses with a list of personal protective gear providers as well as sample policies for businesses to use as guidelines in creating the above-mentioned policies.

Third, the State of Illinois is far behind the rest of the country in implementing the federal unemployment guidelines allowing “gig workers,” small business owners and freelancers to obtain unemployment benefits.

The state needs to IMMEDIATELY and fully implement the federal unemployment security provisions to help those workers who have been impacted so severely.

Fourth, the State should continue to educate the public that after opening Illinois and the nation to “normalcy,” that the virus will still be present and will continue to spread. The best way to combat the inevitable resurgence of the virus is through smart actions: social distancing, mask wearing and hand washing.

Respectfully,
Thomas Scott McCullagh
Illinois State Senate Candidate
49th District
Republican
