It is time to save Illinois Press Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 4th, 2020 The voice of the people must drive the COVID-19 decision making process in Illinois not an uber-wealthy Chicagoan – Thomas McCullagh  Shorewood, IL – “It’s time for Senate President Harmon and Speaker Madigan to reconvene the General Assembly,” Thomas McCullagh said.

McCullagh, a small business entrepreneur and the Republican candidate for Illinois State Senate District 49, acknowledges the Governor has expanded authority to deal with emergencies as they arise. “His authority expired on April 8th and should not exceed 30 days at his own discretion. It requires the check-and-balance of the legislature to approve it; they are the voice of the people.

Not reconvening the legislature is a gross violation of the public trust,” McCullagh said.  “It is critical for our legislators to be intimately involved in the decision-making process to fully represent all the citizens of Illinois and not just Chicago, the governor’s hometown,” he added.  McCullagh points to the Federal Assistance program as an example. “If the legislature were in session it could have developed a program to enable business owners, “gig” workers, and other eligible businesses to apply for assistance. As it is, implementation will not occur until the end of May.  We have thousands of citizens who have lost their sole source of income and the governor is ignoring it.

I find that unacceptable. The Governor should do the right thing and demand the general assembly re-convenes; lives and the economic future of Illinoisans depend upon it. This is exactly why I am running for state senate. It is time to give the decision making reins of power back to the people including the ability to reign in the obscene tax and spend mentality of today’s legislature.”
