Ives Response to the Anarchy in Seattle

“ I was stationed in Germany when the Berlin Wall came down. I understand what societal transformation looks like. And I can tell you transformation requires more than passion and self-righteousness. Transformation requires leadership and clear vision – especially in moments of uncertainty. ”

June 11, 2020 – In Seattle, Washington, police have vacated a Capitol Hill precinct and protesters have taken over the neighborhood around it.

“As I have said, I understand and share the anger over George Floyd’s death,” said Jeanne Ives, candidate for Congress (IL-06). “I understand the desire to hold bad actors accountable, and to reform systems that are not working or could be improved. But what we have seen in Seattle is not coming together to work for the betterment of our communities. This chaos, division and destruction. Attacking anyone who stands in your way now will make it more difficult to rebuild a better society later. I was stationed in Germany when the Berlin Wall came down. I understand what societal transformation looks like. And I can tell you transformation requires more than passion and self-righteousness. Transformation requires leadership and clear vision – especially in moments of uncertainty.

“Those who claim to want more love, goodness and peaceful order should know that it will never be brought about by destruction and anarchy. Leaders who may support these protesters in principle need to take charge now. If they don’t, the pandemonium and insecurity being created will ensure that they never find support anywhere but the furthest edge of the fringe.”
