Ives Responds to Demagogue Durbin’s “Token” Comment June 18, 2020 –

This week, Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) called the police reform bill his Republican colleague Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) spearheaded, as the lone Black GOP senator, a “token” approach
Durbin’s insensitive use of the word “token” to describe the very serious work of Senator Scott’s bill is offensive as, for years, the use of the word has instead been used to diminish the significance of a African American person’s work or position.  For Senator Durbin such gaffes are not unusual.  Many remember Durbin equating US military forces to Nazis.
According to Durbin’s office, he has since apologized to Senator Scott in the wake of swift criticism.
“Dick Durbin’s comment not only is racially charged, but in fact just wrong,” said Jeanne Ives, candidate for Congress (IL-06) “To dismiss the serious conversations, compromise and work Senator Scott put into his bill is to dismiss a colleague’s professionalism and earnest intent to solve problems. There is no one better in the Senate to lead on this issue and produce a bill that will be accepted by the majority and signed into law.  Durbin is truly showing that he is interested in politics and not policy – again.
“Not surprisingly – other Illinois Democrats including Congressman Sean Casten remain silent. In Illinois, everything is about politics.  Durbin’s comments, and Casten’s silence, just goes to show how totally disingenuous these politicians are.  If Dick Durbin – and his fellow Democrats – wanted to do something about systemic racism, why haven’t they done it? Durbin himself has been in office for 37 years and is the second most powerful Democrat  in the US Senate. Why hasn’t he championed school choice? Or criminal justice reform? Do you get it yet? For Dick Durbin, this moment is all about politics. It’s the Illinois Way.”
